Read on to find out what we have been up to in Reception this week.

Happy New Year!

In geography, the children have been introduced to Google Earth; they have been learning about maps, how to use an atlas, what an island is and being able to find the United Kingdom and other familiar places on a map. The second topic focus for this term is science; the children will be carrying out different experiments to learn about changes in matter.  This week they observed how ice melts from a solid to a liquid and how a liquid takes the shape of the container it is in. The children are learning to write ‘I can see…’ sentences with inspirational pictures. We have consolidated the special friends - sh, ch, th and qu.  In maths, they have been introduced to many new key words as we explore and compare capacity and mass.  They have been using balancing scales to identify which objects are heavier, lighter or the same. In addition to this, we have been learning to identify when containers are full or empty, wide or narrow and shallow or deep.

Key messages

  • Please remember to check your child’s bag every day in case they have brought home anything from school, or in case they have a first aid slip.

  • We have run out of all our spare clothes because they haven’t been returned. If you have any of our clothes at your house please send them back in. Please also remember to make sure your child has a spare change of clothes in their bag, even if they are not a child who usually has an accident.
