EYFS News

Read on to find out what we have been up to in Reception this week.

This week in Reception, we have been learning about different countries around the world. We have been comparing Trinidad and Tobago and England, recognising the similarities and differences. We used a globe and google earth to find and explore both countries. In science, we continue with our topic, changing states of matter, and this week we will be seeing how chocolate changes from a solid to a liquid. In English, we have introduced finger spaces and the importance of leaving a space in between words when writing a sentence. In maths, we have been finding and representing numbers 6,7 and 8. In the creation station, the children have been making flags for Trinidad and Tobago and England and also creating treasure maps. In free learning, the children are writing ‘I can see…’ sentences with inspirational pictures. Also, they have been enjoying playing a phonics board game, taking it in turns to roll the dice, and reading the word to see who can reach the end first. In the learning garden, the children have been using the construction materials to build a mode of transport for them to travel around the world. Some children built a fantastic boat so they could travel all the way to South America!

Key messages

  • To review the phonics sounds that your child has been learning, please visit the phonics website:

  • Reading books: please note we don’t expect children to be able to read the story books that they have chosen to bring home. They are for you to read to them. Please note, any books brought in after Thursday morning will not be changed.

  • Please remember to check your child’s bag every day in case they have brought home anything from school, or in case they have a first aid slip.

  • We have run out of all our spare clothes because they haven’t been returned. If you have any of our clothes at your house please send them back in. Please also remember to make sure your child has a spare change of clothes in their bag, even if they are not a child who usually has an accident.

  • Donations of old leggings/trousers, tights and compost would be hugely appreciated.

  • International afternoon is on Friday 2nd February. Please could you send your child in wearing the national dress from their country, or in the colours of the flag of which they come from. In Reception, children will be exploring and learning a little bit about: Brazil, Italy, Turkey and Japan. We don’t require any parent volunteers for Reception, however thank you so much to those who have offered; we really appreciate it!
