KS1 News

Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 1 & 2 this week.

Year 1

We hope everyone has enjoyed their holidays, we’ve heard lots of lovely and exciting stories from the children and how they are all ready to get back into lots of learning.  In maths, we have been exploring numbers up to 20 on a number line, spotting the similarities between ‘teen’ numbers and single digit numbers, understanding that a teen number has 1 ten, and finding one more and one less. In English we have introduced a new story called the Yeti and the Bird. Although we have not begun to read it yet, we are busy making inferences and predictions about what the story might be about. We have also been learning lots about question marks and creating our own questions about the Yeti. We have been experts at drawing what a question mark looks like, and using them in our sentences. Henri Matisse is our new artist that we will be exploring in art. We looked at lots of his collage artwork and picked which one was our favourite. In geography we used atlases to help us find and label the 4 countries in the United Kingdom. In science we identified and labelled the different parts of a plant and even managed to do our own planting! Hopefully our cress seeds will grow.

Year 2

Welcome back! It was so wonderful hearing from the children at the beginning of the week. They certainly had an enjoyable and well deserved break!

This week, we have introduced new units across the curriculum. In science, we have started our unit of work on ‘everyday materials’. We went for a walk on the schools grounds to find different materials. Once we found them, we asked questions and discussed how and why we use them. This linked back to our Y1 unit and the teachers were so impressed with how much the children had remembered!

English saw the launch of our new text- ‘The Dragon Machine’. After reading about the troublesome behaviour of George’s dragons, the children wrote advice using ‘could’, ‘would’ and ‘should’. They were very sensible with their advice and all agreed that seeking adult support when facing difficulty is the best thing George could do. Finally, maths has encouraged us to think outside the box. We have been looking at questions which have unknown values. The children have used cubes to work this out. A huge well done for embracing the challenge and using mistakes as learning opportunities.
