Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 3 & 4 this week.

Year 3

This week in maths, we have increased our understanding of fractions, by solving multi step problems often involving large amounts! In reading, we have enjoyed ‘Leonora Bolt’s secret inventor’ adventures, where the children have enjoyed predicting what will happen next..! In writing, we have completed our setting descriptions based on ‘The Tin Forest’ with a final paragraph where we recorded a conversation with the old man, using inverted commas. We published our fantastic, descriptive pieces today. In science, we investigated magnetic materials by testing magnets on different objects to see their non contact force. In geography, we learned what tectonic plates were and how their slow movement gradually creates fold mountains. In computing, we loved exploring different events to code and program characters on scratch. In PE, we honed our athletic skills by getting in the ready position to throw long distances. We also improved our high distance jumping by jumping over various hurdles, focusing on our trail leg and landing safely. In art, we learnt all about tessellation and other techniques used by Njideka Crosby in her stunning collage creations. We created our own tessellation templates from scratch and explored using different media to create unique collages.

Year 4

We have to say a massive congratulations to our Y4 children for their fantastic class assemblies this week. The children thoroughly enjoyed showing how much they have learned about the Romans by providing a case for why the Romans should rule the Vineyard School. Thank you to everyone who attended!

We have continued our maths topic of money, introducing single and multi step problems which are lifted from real world experiences. Calculating the costs of items from shopping lists, rounding to aid addition and subtraction and working out how much change is required.

In reading, we have been making comparisons between The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe and similar themed fantasy novels including The Land of Roar and Impossible Creatures. The children have been identifying key features within the fantasy genre and recognising differences in reflected society between the novels written 75 years apart!

In writing, we created a four-part story plan to map out our own fantasy narratives. After creating a magical fantasy setting and an intriguing character to meet, children set about laying out the foundations for their story.

In geography, we learned what earthquakes are and how they occur. Looking closer at the San Andreas fault line located in California, we explored the damage levels within urbanised areas as an earthquake magnitude increases.

After creating amazing models last week from marshmallows and paint, the children got the chance to design, set up and begin an experiment around healthy teeth. Using eggs and a variety of liquid solutions, we are looking to see which food and drink can cause the greatest plaque build up and enamel damage. (We apologise in advance for the smell outside the Y4 classrooms as our experiment continues!)
