Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 5 & 6 this week.

Year 5

I hope this newsletter finds you well and that you've had a wonderful week. As we bid farewell to April and welcome sunny May, it's time for our weekly roundup of your children's adventures in learning.

This week has been nothing short of exciting in our classroom as we've embarked on various journeys of knowledge and skill-building.

In English, we continued our study of classic literature by delving into the timeless words of William Shakespeare. Our actors have been honing their acting skills and delving into the depths of Shakespeare's Henry V. They took on the challenge of performing the stirring St. Crispin's Day speech with enthusiasm and gusto, truly bringing the words to life.

In maths, our focus was on angles and precision. Armed with protractors and rulers, the students measured and created angles with remarkable accuracy. It's been a joy to witness their mathematical prowess grow as they tackle new concepts with confidence and determination.

Geography lessons transported us to the sunny shores of the Caribbean as we delved into the fascinating world of tropical storms. From understanding their formation to their impact on the region, our young geographers have shown a keen interest in unraveling the mysteries of nature's fury.

Looking to next week, we have more exciting adventures in store as we continue to explore Shakespeare with our special trip to The Globe Theatre on Thursday…

Year 6

Revision lessons continued in earnest this week as Year 6 looked back at synonyms and antonyms, recapped all the different types of punctuation they’ve learnt in Key Stage 2 and explained its correct use, recalled the properties and names of 2D and 3D shapes and practised some multi-step word problems. It’s just one more week to go until SATS and the children are so ready! On the subject of SATs, we just wanted to remind families that there is an option for children to come to school for 8:15am for a SATs breakfast - this needs to be ordered in the same way that lunches are ordered.

We had a very welcome visit from Year 1 on Monday afternoon who came to read their stories to us. The Year 6 students were brilliant with them, listening intently and giving lots of kind, encouraging feedback to the younger children who left feeling very proud of their writing.

In art, we delved deeper into the life and work of our focus artist for the term: Faviana Rodriguez. Children created an ‘artist’s study’ page in their sketchbooks to present facts and information about this artist and activist using imagery, colour and a lot of their own creativity too. We’re looking forward to getting the paints and a variety of brushes out in our next lesson.

Year 6 have been really enjoying having their music lessons again with their new teacher, Mr Oliver. They have been doing lots of rhythmic games and songs and this week were making connections between colours and music.

All of the Earth Day posters are now in and children from the Green Team took part in judging them with Mrs Dempster to choose some winners - we can’t wait to see them all.

We wish all of Year 6 children and their families a happy and restful bank holiday weekend!
