Year 5 

This week, the children have shown great excitement towards their new learning. We have started a new book in English, called Unspoken, which requires an understanding of its historical context. We therefore spent the first half of the week learning about the US Civil War and slavery. The children were so intrigued and inspired to hear stories from the Underground Railroad, showing curiosity and asking a lot of thought-provoking questions. In maths, we have started our new unit on shape, kicking things off with angles. Across the wider curriculum, we have studied plant reproduction in science, Richmond’s location in geography and we will soon be developing our knowledge of Frida Kahlo. What has been really enjoyable this week has been our reading lessons which have focused on a textless book called ‘Tuesday’. The story is about a mysterious Tuesday evening, when lily pads rise from an ordinary pond and frogs become UFOs ready to terrorise neighbouring suburban areas. Next week, we will start our computing unit and use Crumble to develop our programming skills.

Year 6

Our first week back in the summer term has been very productive as we have been writing the first few paragraphs of our ‘lost chapter’ in English based on ‘The Explorer’. In addition, we have been calculating the areas of various shapes and reading line graphs in maths. In computing, we have been learning to create games using coding blocks on the website Scratch. During our science lessons this week, we have been recapping our prior knowledge of living things and their habitats. We also researched about Carl Linnaeus and his highly influential classification system, which is still in use to date! You can see in the picture we have been practising our relay running and standing long jump. Next week we are excited to build on our statistic knowledge and experiment more with coding on Scratch!
