Caring Curious Courageous

Enabling all children to learn and grow

Friday 12th July 2024

Dear Families,

The festival of sport events this week have been a huge success! Even the rain didn’t stop the key stage one children; they still joined in and enjoyed themselves. Since then the weather has played ball. Thank you to Ms Foster for her hard work over the year to ensure the children at school are receiving a well planned physical education (PE) programme. I hope you all enjoyed watching them showing off their skills to you. It was great to end the week with our Vineyard walk and picnic, thank you to all our volunteers which made this possible.

Next week, we are looking forward to welcoming Mary Qualter back, following her maternity leave. She will be working 3 days a week and will be joined by Amy Jackson, who will also work 3 days a week. Sadly, this means we will be saying goodbye to Danielle Stevenson (please see a message below from her). I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to Danielle for her commitment and hard work to the children at The Vineyard. I wish her well for the new opportunity coming her way.

Please find the family survey results here. Thank you to everyone who took part in this survey. The results will help inform our school development plan for next year.

Next week, year 6 will be putting on their end of primary school production and the curriculum will continue. A gentle reminder that the term ends on Wednesday 24th July at 1.30pm and that every day counts up until the last.

Wishing you a lovely weekend,

Frances

Attendance

Well done to reception, year 3 and 4 for achieving above 96%, in fact 97%. Attendance at school is extremely important right to the end of term. Let's all aim for over 96% next week!

Punctuality

Well done to Amethyst, Sapphire and Starlite for all coming to school on time during the week.

Festival of Sports by Olivia, Issy and Charlotte from 6G

This week, the whole school participated in the Festival of Sports. During the event, we were earning tokens for teamwork, completing the activities with skill, challenging ourselves and cheering on our classmates. Despite the rain, Y1 and 2 persevered and had lots of fun on Tuesday. Luckily, the weather improved for all other year groups and the sun even shone for Reception on Thursday. Thanks to Miss Foster for organising it all and to all the families who came to support us.

Here are some quotes from some children:

Freya in Year 2 said, 'I loved running and thoroughly enjoyed the tug of war even though it was muddy and slippery.'

'Throwing was the most fun because it was challenging,' said Atlas in Year 3.

'My favourite were the teamwork activities because they were different to other years,' said Sofia from Year 4.

Mila and Tiger from Y3 loved the human knot challenge and being in the final sprint races.

A message from Danielle Stevenson

It has been a great experience & pleasure to work alongside The Vineyard team to support the children with SEND and their families this year. My role, as you know, is a maternity cover and therefore I will be leaving at the end of this academic year. In September, my new  role is in the Wandsworth borough as an Assistant Headteacher with Outreach work at a PRU (Pupil Referral Unit) alongside teaching children with Social Emotional and Mental Health needs.

I will take with me, many memories which make me smile as well as ones I have learned from and developed my skill-set further. The SENDco role is a fine balance between paperwork, knowledge, liaising with outside agencies and being available not only for children but TLSAs, teachers and families. I hope you feel you have been supported this year, because I have given it my all.

On Tuesday, we were fortunate enough to visit The Alligator’s Mouth book shop and spend some vouchers that the school had received. The children’s instructions were to buy a picture book for their new year 5 & 6 classes. They did an absolutely fantastic job and we spent over £1...

Safety Advice from Richmond's Education Safeguarding Coordinator

Water safety For pupils

The BBC news on Monday night about water safety follows a number of recent drownings in UK rivers and at the coast. You will remember the local tragedy of two summers ago when a child drowned in the River Thames at Hampton.  Although the weather is cold right now, on hot days the river is very tempting, especially to young people. Richmond council water safety advice video is here.

Window safety

There have recently been a number of incidents of children tragically dying after falling out of windows or from height across London.  In addition to this, the London Ambulance Service have provided the data below:

January 2019-January 2022, London Ambulance Service recorded:

•85 incidents of children falling from heights

•Six of these children died at the scene.

•16.5% of these children were identified as having a learning disability

With the summer approaching and windows more likely to be open, window safety is a key area that multi-agency practitioners can raise awareness about with families.

•Make sure that children cannot reach windows, and that they are kept locked(but easy to open in an emergency)

•If opening a window, make sure children are supervised

•Don't keep furniture near windows that could be climbed upon

PTA

As we approach the end of the school year here’s a quick PTA retrospective.

In the last ten months we ran (deep breath)…

A disco, two movie nights, Santa’s Grotto, a bingo night, a Book Week quiz and book club, the tea towel fundraiser, and a silent auction.

We tried some new major events: Yes Day, Spin-Yard, VineYard Sale and Mr K’s Super SATS-urday. Some of these will return next year!

Our biggest events — the Christmas Market and Midsommar Fair — raised over £11,000 between them.

And we sold around 1000 items of uniform and more ice lollies than we can count!

The money from these activities paid for:

• A first aid course for every child in school • World Book Week author visits for every child • STEM Week workshops for every child • The wooden gazebo on the KS1 playground • Extra resources for each classroom and subject area, per the teachers’ wishes • Hot meals for the teachers on parents’ evening days

Not all our money has been spent; we are putting some in a holding account for the improvements to the school field, and will spend some on improvements to the library.

Thank you for reading, now onwards and upwards to the end of term!

Cath, Kat and Laura
