Dear Families,
We have had a wonderful start to the summer term with no time wasted. Our first week back was filled with discovery during a very busy week of STEM activities. These included all children attending a ZooLab workshop, which was organised by Mr Miller and Kat Par Mackintosh. It was lovely to see so many children bringing in their own science projects and investigations to show their classes. Other lessons included Smashing STEM Stereotypes, investigating the science of how boats float, and a thoughtful computing lesson where children explored the question: Can I trust AI to always answer questions correctly?
Year 5 also went on their residential to Juniper Hall. We were very lucky with the weather and the children had a fantastic time. I would like to offer a sincere thank you to the staff for taking the children away and spending time away from their own families to make these special experiences possible.
Following the recent PTA vote, it is clear how much our families care about the school and the initiatives we support. It is wonderful to see such a high level of engagement; that passion is a vital part of what makes our school community so vibrant. I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has served on the PTA Committee over the years, as well as those who have supported their work through volunteering and attendance. Your efforts have created wonderful memories for the children, and we truly value the time you have given.
We are looking forward to moving forwards together, starting with our school picnic on Friday 8th May at 3.30pm, where we hope to see many of you. If you would like to run a community event or have any ideas for the future, please do email me or speak to me on the gate. I am very keen to work with the whole community to ensure we continue to build a kind and inclusive environment for all our families.
Wishing you a lovely, sunny weekend
Frances

Vineyard Mini Marathon Colour Run
When? Thursday 30th April during school time
What do I need to organise for my child? Come to school in Navy PE bottoms and trainers + a white/light coloured t-shirt
Optional – swimming goggles and/or sunglasses
Why? At the weekend 59,000 adults and 18,000 primary and secondary children will run the London and Mini London Marathon
The Vineyard did not gain a ballot place in the Mini Marathon this year, so we are taking part in the schools Mini Marathon – a challenge to run 2 miles on school site.
During PE lessons next week children will complete 1 mile of movement, leaving the last mile to be completed on the colour run day.
Should children collect all 6 colours on their t-shirt they know they have completed the challenge.
This event allows for PE progression and target setting e.g. if you collect two colours this year can you collect three colours next year.
Colour run safety. We are following the guidelines given to us by the manufacturers of the colour powder.
The key points from the guidance are:
The powder is non toxic - Ingestion of Running Imp colour powder will not cause issues. Breathing small amounts of the powder is unlikely to be harmful. The powder will not cause skin irritation in small quantities. The powder may cause slight eye irritation. Seek medical attention if in doubt. We recommend wearing sunglasses/safety glasses.
Made from natural ingredients - The colour powder is made from corn starch/+ Talc, dyed with food grade colouring.
Family Volunteers – if you are available from 12:30-3pm and have a DBS that the school office has seen please complete the google form https://forms.gle/B1vtU2B6katD5W8L8
Your role will be various! Setting up, re-stocking powder, throwing powder, tidying up.

STEM Week
Last week, the children immersed themselves in an exciting and enriching STEM Week, packed with hands-on learning, creativity, and curiosity. From the very first day, the school was buzzing with enthusiasm as children across all year groups engaged in a range of mini-projects spanning science, maths and computing. These short, focused activities encouraged pupils to experiment, think critically, and challenge themselves, while collaborative problem-solving tasks helped to develop teamwork and resilience. Throughout the week, classes also explored inspiring STEM pioneers from around the world, celebrating diversity and representation while breaking down stereotypes about who can succeed in STEM careers.
Building on this year's Safer Internet Day, we returned to the topic of AI usage and learnt that not everything we read or hear online is always true. The children then carried out their own simple research by asking AI different questions and comparing the answers they received. They explored whether the responses were true, false, or confusing, and discussed how we might check information using books, adults, or trusted sources. It was a really engaging activity that encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and lots of thoughtful discussion.
A particular highlight was the series of workshops delivered across the week. We extend our sincere thanks to Kat Par Mackintosh for her organisation of ZooLab, and to the PTA for generously funding this fantastic experience. The children were fascinated by the interactive animal sessions, which included some very unusual visitors, from cockroaches and a giant snail to even a snake, giving them a truly memorable, hands-on science experience. We are also incredibly grateful to our parent volunteer, Dr Saskia Siebl, who led engaging neuroscience workshops for every year group from Reception to Year 6. Her sessions captured the children’s imaginations as they explored how the brain works, learning about key parts such as the hippocampus and amygdala. Pupils worked collaboratively to solve problems, asked thoughtful and curious questions, and demonstrated a real eagerness to understand how they can use their brains effectively to support their learning.
Throughout the week, children also brought in their own projects from home to share with their classmates. They clearly relished the opportunity to present their experiments, explain their thinking, and answer questions in a class Q&A at the end of each session. It was wonderful to see such confidence, curiosity, and pride in their work. STEM Week was a fantastic celebration of innovation and learning, and we are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm and engagement shown by all our pupils.

For multilingual pupils, reading in all the languages they speak is not only central to their academic attainment, but also to their language development, confidence and sense of belonging in school. (The Bell Foundation, 2026).
As an international community, we would like to add to our library books in languages other than English.
If you are able to help, you could support this initiative in three ways:
1) buying a foreign language book (suitable for children from age 4 - 11) and donating it to the school.
2) donating a children's book you already own (suitable for children from age 4 - 11) to the school.
3) making a donation via School Money. We will use this to buy books from the National Literacy Trust’s multi-language book list for our library, like the examples:

Any family who donates a book or money for books to the school can have a 'This book was gifted by...' sticker with the name of your child/children.
Please therefore include a note of your child/children with any books so your donation can be credited. We can trace names via School Money if you make your donation via that platform.

Music Day
In the last week of spring term we celebrated Music Day. Kidenza, a small orchestra, came to The Vineyard to perform some fantastic music to all the children, and to demonstrate how their instruments work.
And that wasn’t all! In the evening, the hall was packed for two concerts by children taking instrumental and singing lessons. From Reception to Year 6, our performers showed great bravery to step up and show the fruits of their musical practice. Well done everyone!

If your child is interested in learning the flute, or a brass instrument (trumpet/trombone), we currently have spaces for lessons in the Music Hub with our brilliant teachers. Get in touch with music@ if you are interested.
On Sunday 3rd May, Richmond Music Trust will be hosting Drum Day 2026, a day dedicated to drumming led by experienced RMT Drum Tutors. Please see here for more information.

Earth Day – Wednesday 22nd April
The children celebrated Earth Day by having a screen-free afternoon. This included no slides on the screen, no Chromebooks or I-Pads. The children also had the option to wear an item of blue or green clothing to fundraise for recycling bins on our playgrounds. Thank you to those who contributed, we raised over £150. If you haven't had a chance to donate, please do so on School Money or bring the coins into the school office.

Message from Mrs Norman
As a practical and heartfelt way of thanking the excellent team who treated and cared for my mum, I (rashly) decided to undertake a sponsored marathon walk for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Delighted that the South Coast marathon hike from Brighton to Eastbourne was conveniently ‘local’, I leapt at the opportunity to sign up.
It’s been quite a training programme! I have come to enjoy Richmond Park Parkrun and walks in the Surrey Hills… My most important finding has been that walking is all about the snacks: no wonder it’s such a popular national pastime!
The walk is on Saturday 2nd May. If you are able to sponsor me, I would appreciate it very much. It’s a sobering statistic that today in the UK, someone is diagnosed with cancer every 90 seconds. Clearly, the work of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity soldiers on. I’m really pleased to be able to raise money for them and am very close to my fundraising target.
Many thanks,
Mrs Norman
