Caring Curious Courageous

Enabling all children to learn and grow

Friday 13th December 2024

Dear families,

I am absolutely delighted to announce that the Key Stage Two data has now been confirmed. A fantastic 85% of our Year 6 students have left The Vineyard having achieved the expected standard in reading, writing, and maths. This outstanding achievement places us 7th out of 40 schools in the borough! Please see our statutory data here.

As we approach the end of the first term of this academic year, I would like to take a moment to reflect on what has been happening since October half-term.

What have the children been up to?

  • STEM week, the theme was ‘change and adapt’. Many ‘What if…’ questions were asked, such as; What if humans had four arms? What if there was no light? The week ended with a wonderful science fair where children were able to show the projects they had worked on at home
  • Remembrance Day assemblies
  • Sports competitions include: girls and boys football,  basketball, cross country, table tennis, swimming gala trials
  • Odd Socks Day which was an opportunity for children to express themselves and celebrate their individuality
  • The primary maths challenge – 119 of our year 5&6 children took part
  • Trips to: Buster Farm, Buddhist Temple, St Matthias Church, Battle of Britain Bunker visits
  • Workshops: anti bullying, Year 5 Space Dome, Year 1 Victorian Day
  • Bikeability in year 6 – preparation for riding bikes on the road to secondary school
  • Children have played music for our prospective family tours

What parent engagement events have taken place this term?

  • Family teacher meetings
  • Launching the Anti-Racist Pledge
  • Year 5 class assemblies
  • Family Forum – class reps brought your questions to the senior leadership team
  • Music performance: rocksteady concerts, orchestra, recorder, year 3 all learnt how to play a stringed instrument and performed to their families
  • Christmas productions with the KS2 concerts and Gems production still to come next week
  • Online Safety workshop – next week (see below)

How about the PTA?

  • Serving coffee and tea at our prospective family mornings
  • Glow Party (today)

Please find a letter here from Antony Cook, Chair of Governors.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone who celebrates a very happy Christmas and for those who don’t, have a wonderful winter break.

Looking forward to 2025!

Teaching and Learning at The Vineyard

Talk partners, a strategy where students are paired to discuss ideas and solve problems collaboratively, play a vital role in fostering learning and personal development in classrooms. It promotes collaborative learning, enhances communication skills, boosts confidence and participation and provides immediate feedback for children and teachers.

This half-term, we have introduced a new approach to talk partners, for teachers to use with their classes, called 'think, pair, share'. This approach enables a teacher to, first, pose a question and then give the children thinking time to process the question and formulate a response. The children are then asked to talk to their partner, exchange and compare ideas and take turns to listen to what each individual has to say. In the final step, the teacher asks some children to share their ideas with the whole class.

This new approach has enabled teachers to check the children's understanding and address any misconceptions that may arise in the lesson. By combining reflection, peer discussion, and group sharing, it creates a rich and inclusive learning environment where every student has a voice.

Online Safety Workshop for All Families – Adults Only!

Date: Tuesday, 17th December at 6:30 pm
Join the virtual meeting here.

This workshop, led by Emma Clarke, the Online Safety Lead at Achieving for Children, is a valuable opportunity for parents to stay informed about online safety. With children having easy access to a wide range of online content, it’s crucial to understand the importance of parental controls. The school strongly encourages all parents to attend this session, but please note that children should not be present during the meeting.

Topics will include:

  • Stranger danger
  • Video games
  • Roblox
  • Algorithms
  • What parents can do to protect their children online

Smart Phone Free Childhood

Concern over the effects of smartphone use for children is becoming increasingly prevalent in the media. There is a growing body of evidence showing a direct correlation between the age children get a smartphone and the negative impact it has on their long term mental health. For more information, please visit the SFC website.

Look out for a parent-led presentation on this topic in January (date TBC).

The Vineyard believes that if a child needs a phone, then a dumb or brick phone is better than a smartphone.

Music news

Congratulations to all our Rocksteady bands for their brilliant concerts in the last week! The children had a great time, and we definitely spotted some parents moshing in the pit. If your child would like to try Rocksteady next term, there are still a few spaces for guitar, keyboard and vocals. Sign up here.

If your child is starting or continuing instrumental lessons in the Music Hub next term, please look out for the fees on your SchoolMoney account. All fees for Spring 1 must be paid by 18th December to avoid losing your place.

Next week, will be our last musical performances of the term: the KS2 carol concerts at St Matthias. We look forward to seeing families there for what is always a lovely festive occasion.

School Council

Congratulations to the following children who were voted by their classmates to be the school council representatives this year. They have introduced themselves to the rest of the school in assemblies and they have already fulfilled their first task of gathering children's feedback on the proposed menus for the Spring Term.  We will meet next after the holidays to discuss our goals for the rest of the academic year.

Reminder: The Vineyard SEND Coffee Morning on Wednesday 29th January at 9am

On Wednesday 29th January at 9.00-9.30am, Mrs Qualter and Miss Jackson, our school SENcos, are hosting a coffee morning in the library at The Vineyard School. This is a great opportunity to meet the Inclusion Team and find out how you can access their support as well as to meet other parents. We look forward to seeing you there!

International Day - 31st January 2025

This day is an opportunity to celebrate our international community, which includes those who are of British heritage. We would love children to come to school dressed in a way which represents their culture or country they come from. This could be as simple as weaning the colours of their flag (no football kits) to a traditional outfit.

On this day, the children will be learning more about each other's heritage in the afternoon. It would be wonderful if any families would like to get involved with this afternoon. Do you want to teach: a traditional dance; a song; some of your language; a tradition? Please email your class teacher via the year group inbox to offer your help.

Attendance

Well done to all the year groups getting above 96%. The year to date attendance is 96%. it would be great if we could get it to 96.5% or above!

Racial Justice Update

Last week, Miss Sanchez delivered an assembly to all of KS1 and KS2 around the language we will use in our school to support the understanding of being anti-racist - diversity, equality and equity. These words have been added to our school website, along with our racial justice action plan.

It's not too late if your child hasn't had their flu jab
