Year 4’s Battle of the Books, by Annelise Morrison
Last Thursday, eight children from Year 4 had a lovely time at the 2025 Battle of the Books. Our team was: me, Antonis, Ava, Ben, Camille, Matilda, Ruby and Ted.
Thanks to the parents’ generous donation, we had a posh taxi that took us to the best destination of all time! We returned to school by bus.
When we got to the Catholic host school, we started doing quiz rounds about the six books that we had read. There were random rounds, where we chose people to answer a question about a book that wasn’t shared in advance. There were also specialist rounds, where the specialists of a particular book answered the question. There were also multiple choice rounds. Each school used a whiteboard to record our answers. We all took three or four turns.
Every group was given a selection of three quotations from three of the books, and we had to choose one and design and create a picture that brought that book to life with the art materials we had. We could do pop-ups or whatever we liked.
All the teams had a talk from the author, Guy Bass, who has written Scrap and the Stitch Head series. He was really funny and shared cool poems and awesome stories about his childhood. His book, Scrap, is really interesting and fun! I recommend his books if you haven’t read them already.
It was fun to have our break and lunch at a different school. We ate our packed lunch on the giant field and had to avoid the coned-off area as golf balls sometimes come into the grounds!
We didn’t win, but we each received a certificate of participation and got to bring our beautiful masterpiece back to school. Ava got the signed book of Scrap for our school. Mrs Norman got us ice lollies on the way back.
Even though the Battle of the Books ended last week, I miss it. I wish we could keep doing it because it was super-great.
