Caring Curious Courageous

Enabling all children to learn and grow

Friday 4th July 2025

Dear families,

Happy Independence Day to our American families!

With just over two weeks to go before the end of the academic year, the corridors are alive with the sounds of Matilda, as Year 6 rehearsals for their end-of-primary production are in full swing. The excitement is building, and we can't wait to see their final performance!

The children have coped wonderfully with the warm weather this week. They’ve shown great sense - wearing hats, drinking plenty of water, and making the most of shady spots during break times. Well done to all of them!

Vineyard’s Got Talent truly lived up to its name, with performances ranging from comedy and singing to dancing, drumming, and piano playing. We were treated to a fantastic final on Tuesday afternoon, which ended on a high as the whole school sang Here Comes the Sun together, which was a lovely moment of unity and joy.

Next week brings our much-anticipated Festival of Sport. Please check the dates below to find out when your child’s event is taking place. We hope many of you will be able to join us and cheer them on!

Last but not least, please see the link to find out who in our teaching team is leaving and who is joining. Leavers and joiners 2025

Wishing you a lovely weekend,
Frances

Teaching and Learning at The Vineyard

Writing family workshop

A big thank you to all the families who joined us for our recent writing workshop. It was wonderful to share the journey we have been on this year to create our own bespoke Vineyard Writing Curriculum. As shared during the session, writing has been a key priority for us this year and will continue to be next year. We are committed to supporting all our pupils in becoming confident, creative and skilled writers. It has been exciting to witness the progress the children have shown already based on tweaks we have made to core texts and the delivery of lessons. Children at The Vineyard are engaged in writing lessons and are proud of their work; this is very evident when children read their work to other classes or stop to check out the new sparkling whole school writing display. If you were unable to attend or would like to revisit what was shared, the presentation slides are available to view here. To support your child at home, please focus on reading and oral storytelling, as reading really is the key to becoming a competent writer. Look out for your child's class bulletin each half-term as this will give you more detailed information about the texts being studied and grammar and punctuation being taught. Thank you for your continued support.

Debating Club News

Hi, I’m Tanvi Jain from 6 Garnett and I’m really excited to share that on Tuesday 24th June, we won the debating competition for ‘The Richmond Bridge Shield’, held at Deer Park school and with participation from Old Vicarage School, the host school and, of course, The Vineyard.

The first topic that we debated was ‘This house believes that art is more important than science’ and we (me, Karim and Wali) spoke against the motion. When it came to our turn, we all felt quite nervous, but we had practised a lot and our teachers had helped us to prepare.

We all gave it our best. We knew that the judges would be scoring us for a clear point well made as well as our confidence and teamwork. We made sure we stuck to this!

Both schools had an A and B team. The Vineyard's other team was made up of Defne and Cheryl. They had to compete as a pair as Ben was off sick that day. They came third! This shows how you need to think flexibly and be resilient when competing.

After a second round of debating the motion 'This house believes that school holidays should be shorter', the competition was complete. The Judges gave their feedback and announced that we had won! We felt so happy and proud!

Vineyard's Got Talent Final

After many weeks of children rehearsing, two rounds of tough auditions and the build up of excitement, we held our first ever Vineyard's Got Talent final. This event was to celebrate all the talent across the school and the final did not disappoint! Our finalists were Luisa (Year 1), Leo (Year 2), Anna (Year 3), Amber, Lea and Ivy (Year 4), Arhaan (Year 5), Jake (Year 6) and our wildcard entry, Defne (Year 4). The audience were blown away by the wide variety of talent and skills on display - singing, drumming, glockenspiel playing, dancing, piano playing. We also enjoyed a beautiful rendition of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' by our Reception and Gems choir - what a treat for us! The judges had an incredibly difficult decision to make, but they were ably assisted by our guest judge, George (Year 3). After much deliberation, the judges declared Jake to be the winner for his captivating drumming skills! Well done to Jake and all the other finalists for taking part and for sharing their talent with us. This super event was rounded off with a whole school rendition of 'Here Comes the Sun', led by Mr Oliver and accompanied by Fletcher (Year 6) on the piano. It was truly magical to hear the whole school singing together.

Thank you to Renee (site manager), Marc Oliver (music lead) and James Rigby (SRP lead) for all their hard work and support in setting up this event. And a massive thanks to Cath Cook for her tech support!

Maths Challenge results are in!

Thank you to all the Year 2, 3, and 4 children who showed such courage and enthusiasm while taking part in this year's First Maths Challenge. It was truly a pleasure to see how determined, focused, and engaged the children were throughout the challenge.

The results were excellent and highlighted the fantastic problem-solving skills that our children possess. Their ability to tackle tricky questions with perseverance and confidence was impressive and reflects the hard work they put into their learning every day.

We are incredibly proud of everyone who participated and look forward to hosting another exciting and successful challenge next year.

Mr Jackson, Maths' Lead

Year 4’s Battle of the Books, by Annelise Morrison

Last Thursday, eight children from Year 4 had a lovely time at the 2025 Battle of the Books. Our team was: me, Antonis, Ava, Ben, Camille, Matilda, Ruby and Ted.

Thanks to the parents’ generous donation, we had a posh taxi that took us to the best destination of all time! We returned to school by bus.

When we got to the Catholic host school, we started doing quiz rounds about the six books that we had read. There were random rounds, where we chose people to answer a question about a book that wasn’t shared in advance. There were also specialist rounds, where the specialists of a particular book answered the question. There were also multiple choice rounds. Each school used a whiteboard to record our answers. We all took three or four turns.

Every group was given a selection of three quotations from three of the books, and we had to choose one and design and create a picture that brought that book to life with the art materials we had. We could do pop-ups or whatever we liked.

All the teams had a talk from the author, Guy Bass, who has written Scrap and the Stitch Head series. He was really funny and shared cool poems and awesome stories about his childhood. His book, Scrap, is really interesting and fun! I recommend his books if you haven’t read them already.

It was fun to have our break and lunch at a different school. We ate our packed lunch on the giant field and had to avoid the coned-off area as golf balls sometimes come into the grounds!

We didn’t win, but we each received a certificate of participation and got to bring our beautiful masterpiece back to school. Ava got the signed book of Scrap for our school. Mrs Norman got us ice lollies on the way back.

Even though the Battle of the Books ended last week, I miss it. I wish we could keep doing it because it was super-great.
