Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 5 & 6 this week.

Year 5

We have had a sweltering week but have loved all the amazing activities that have been happening in year 5!

The tastiest activity of the year so far was the vegetable curry making day. In their groups, the children chose their ingredients, planned their steps and cooked their curry. We were most impressed with how they tried all of the other groups' curries and gave complimentary feedback. If your child has recreated their vegetable curry at home, we would love to see their pictures in the year 5 inbox.

Not only have we been cooking this week but we went on our trip to Rushall Farm. Rushall farm is a working farm and the children loved seeing an environment, which was different to their daily surroundings. There was a range of activities from tractor riding to chicken feeding and even seeing the cute calves.

As a year group, we are all very proud of our Vineyard’s Got Talent finalist, Arhaan. He did an amazing performance in front of the school and made year 5 proud. Not only is everyone very proud of our finalist, but we are very proud of everyone who got up and performed in the first round.

We have had some interesting lessons this week. In history, we learnt about the Viking Kingdom in England called ‘Danelaw’. Many people don’t know that vikings controlled a part of England for 150 years and evidence can be found in place names today. In other lessons, we have covered imperial units in maths, eyewitness accounts in English and circulatory systems in different animals in science.

A note to say that in all of our activities and trips this year, the children have acted with maturity, enthusiasm and respect.

Year 6

Last week, 6K had a fantastic time visiting the Mosque in Kingston, which 6J and 6G had visited before PGL. The children were respectful and curious, asking thoughtful questions and learning so much about Islamic faith and practices. It was a valuable and eye-opening experience that enriched our RE learning.

In science, we explored how exercise affects our pulse rate through hands-on investigations. The children were fully engaged, testing their heart rates before and after different activities and analysing the results. This week, our science learning has continued with a focus on the circulatory system, deepening our understanding of how our bodies function.

Alongside this, we channelled our creativity and experience into writing brilliant “Surviving Year 6” guides for the current Year 5s - offering advice, humour and top tips for making the most of their final year at primary school. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to reflect on how much we have packed into the year. We look forward to sharing these with Y5 later in the term.

Rehearsals for our production have really ramped up too! Lines are being learned, songs are being sung, and energy levels are high as we bring the performance to life.

This week began with an exciting DT day, where the children designed and built moving fairground rides using motors and circuits. It was fantastic to see teamwork, perseverance and innovation in action. They were not straightforward and the children were really proud of their end results - check out some pictures on the school’s Instagram.

Throughout everything, we've continued our class reading of Skellig: a story that has captivated us from the start. We’re on the edge of our seats as we approach the conclusion, eager to discover what lies ahead for Michael and Mina.
