Teaching and Learning at The Vineyard
It has been fantastic to see such a positive attitude from children and staff as we have returned to school. A key focus has been re-establishing routines and high expectations that create the conditions for excellent teaching and learning. Research from the Education Endowment Foundation highlights the importance of explicitly teaching, modelling and reinforcing routines and learning behaviours. We are seeing this in the way children enter and settle into lessons, listen and respond, move around school and transition between activities. We are also setting high expectations for presentation, handwriting and the quality of work from the very start, establishing strong habits and standards that will support learning throughout the year.
Alongside this, teachers have been investing time in getting to know their children as learners, with activities adapted to different ages and stages. From seeing our Reception children confidently navigating the lunch hall to our Upper Key Stage 2 children acting as positive role models for younger pupils, we are building a strong sense of belonging and responsibility across the school. We are also thinking beyond what is recorded in books, focusing on the quality of children’s discussions, listening skills, responses and engagement in learning. These strong foundations will support children to become increasingly confident, independent and successful learners throughout the year.
Learning Bulletins
Our Learning Bulletins give you an overview of the key knowledge, skills and vocabulary your child will be learning in school. They are a useful way to understand what your child is learning across the curriculum and the important ideas and language they will encounter.
You don’t need to teach the content at home! Instead, use the bulletin as a starting point for talking to your child about their learning, asking them questions, reading together and making connections with everyday experiences. You’ll also find suggested books, activities, places to visit and useful websites that can help you explore some of the learning together.
Most importantly, be curious about what your child is learning and give them opportunities to talk about, explain and share their knowledge with you.
