Caring Curious Courageous

Enabling all children to learn and grow

Friday 17th March 2023

Dear all families,

Happy St Patrick's Day and Red Nose Day!

I am sure you will have noticed that at school we place a huge importance on reading. Research clearly shows that the ability to read is fundamental to learning. It allows children to unlock access to all areas of the curriculum and enables children to discover and pursue their own interests. It enables the acquisition of vocabulary and this alongside non-fiction reading has the greatest impact on a child's attainment across the curriculum.

At school the children have regular reading lessons, library sessions and listen to stories read to them by the class teachers. At home, the best homework you can do with your child is read with them. If they are reluctant to read to you, then let them sit and listen to you read. One of my favourite childhood memories is being read to by my Dad. Don't forget, asking your child to read the recipe to you whilst you cook dinner counts as reading.

Creative Arts' Week started with a bang this afternoon with Key Stage 1 enjoying a workshop based on the musical Evergreen. It ends with an exhibition next Friday although not quite as there is a concert on Tuesday 28th March at 6pm in the small hall. If you would like to buy a ticket click here.

Wishing you a lovely weekend,

Frances Bracegirdle

Attendance

Well done to Year 1-6 for all getting attendance above 95%, keep it up!

Ready, Set, Maths!

At The Vineyard, we strive to provide children with opportunities to challenge themselves and demonstrate their mathematical ability. With this in mind, we are excited to say that we are taking part in two mathematical challenges this year.

The Junior Maths Challenge, taking place in April, is available for children in Year 5 and Year 6. It is designed to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The deadline for registering your child for the JMC has now passed. However, there may still be opportunities for some additional students to take part. Please email jjackson@vineyard.richmond.sch.uk if you have any enquiries.

The First Maths Challenge, taking place in June, is available for children in Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4. It is designed to encourage pupils to think outside the box and approach problems logically.

Both challenges are an online assessment and the children will receive a bronze, silver or gold certificate for their participation.

If you haven’t already, and would like to register your child for the FMC, please complete the following form (deadline: 1st May 2023).

Friday 31st March- Wear a Hat Day

We have a child in school with a personal interest in this fantastic project and would like to raise as much money as we can. We will be showing off our hats and maybe Easter bonnets, when we shake buckets at the gate, and you are also able to donate via Pay360. The children can wear a favourite hat or cap, make an Easter bonnet or even choose a fancy hairband, as of course can you! More information can be found here.

Calling talented and creative parents!

We are looking for someone who could help us film key productions at school and produce copies for parents to have as memories. We would also love to have advice from an enthusiastic event planner who could help us envision how we might use part of our space for special occasions. If you can help us with either of these, please contact Mrs Axbey.

Governors at parent teacher meetings

It was great to see some families talking to our governors at parents evening this week. We hope lots of you got the chance to meet them and ask any questions you may have had.

Handwriting support

Mrs Selene Caldirola-Cutler, our Handwriting Consultant, is kindly offering her help this term in supporting some children from Year 3 and Y4 with their handwriting.

In addition to her handwriting support, Selene is working closely with our teaching and learning lead, Ms Reilly, to create The Vineyard handwriting curriculum from Reception to Year 6 to ensure a consistent approach across the school. You will find more information on Mrs Caldirola-Cutler and her tutoring services on https://handwritingsupport.co.uk

Yerar 6 E-Safety workshop

Following great feedback from our parent talk with Peter Cowley (AfC online safety advisor), we have asked him to come in to work with our Year 6 children and parents.

He will be coming in on Monday 27th March at 9am. All Year 6 parents are strongly encouraged to attend this meeting.
