Caring Curious Courageous

Enabling all children to learn and grow

Friday 21st June 2024

Dear families,

I hope you all enjoyed the PTA's summer fair last Saturday, despite the British weather's attempt to sabotage it! It was another excellent community event with lots of fun activities for our children to do. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the story tent, AKA the rainbow room. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help organise it.

It has been a great week for year 6 who organised an enterprise event for KS2 children. This involved children working together in small teams to plan and create games. They were given a small budget to buy equipment and materials to make prizes. The money they raised will help fund an end of school treat. Next week is the year 6 residential to Osmington Bay. Here's hoping the weather behaves, and the children have a fantastic time.

Several year groups have enjoyed visiting the Barnes Children’s Literature festival this week and there has been a lot of talk around books as a result.

I hope you have a lovely weekend,

Frances

Teaching and Learning at The Vineyard

As mentioned in previous teaching and learning sections of the newsletter, we have recently embarked on a two-year journey to focus on developing a bespoke Vineyard teaching and learning approach based on research from The Forgetting Curve and Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction. So far, our CPD has focused on the importance of reviewing learning in every lesson and breaking the learning down into small steps to support pupil understanding and avoid cognitive overload. During this week’s CPD, we asked teachers to consider what they think highly effective and engaging teaching looks like and this is what we came up with:

Are you leaving The Vineyard due to relocating or changing schools?

Sadly, each year, we know that families may leave The Vineyard due to relocating or changing schools. It would be really helpful if you could email us to confirm that your child is leaving school, so that place can be offered to another family for September. As many of you will be aware, we reallocate the classes each year, and you can find our policy on this here.

Our First Residential Trip to Hooke Court by Year 5

Our school trip was a once in a lifetime experience! All of us enjoyed the fun activities, such as rafting, shelter building, team building and orienteering. The visit was based on the Viking era. We had a Viking feast; Vikings have such good food! As well as being a safe, enjoyable environment, it also benefited our learning. During the trip, we had a Viking wedding, in which two of our fellow students got married! Did you know that you and your partner had to pee in a can to know that you were wedded?

Alya Hassan (Starlite, Year 5)

The residential trip was an amazing experience. In my group, our first activity was raft building and, at the end, we were allowed to jump into the river. It was hilarious, as one of us lost her shoe and all the children who had jumped in had to dive for it in the murky river.

Amelie Baghaei (Starlite, Year 5)

Last week we went on an exciting trip to Hooke Court in Dorset, our first every residential. We stayed in large bell tents in groups of 8, which was very fun. On our trip we did rafting, shelter building, team building as well as loads of Viking themed activities (even attending a Viking wedding). Our favourite activity was rafting because you got soaking wet with your friends. One of our friends even lost their shoe in the mud at the bottom of the pond, and it took an hour to get it back! We were very excited for the trip and when we arrived we were ecstatic because many of us had never been camping before. Hooke Court: an unforgettable experience.

Universal Free School Meals Evaluation

To measure the success of his universal free school meals scheme, the Mayor of London committed to support an independent evaluation of the programme. As one of the evaluation partners, we are gathering the views of schools, parents and children to support future decisions around universal free school meals in London.

Families are being asked to complete this survey using this link https://bit.ly/FSM-London or via this QR code:

SANTA’S GROTTO IS IN DANGER!

> You read that right. After many years of Santa’s Grotto — a much loved Vineyard event both for the youngest children and the Year 6 elves — the organising team has disbanded. (It has traditionally been owned by a separate team, not the committee).

> Are you a fan of our grotto? Could you help support it continuing? We are looking for a small team of 3-4 people who could help deliver the festive magic. Please contact pta@vineyardpta.org or drop into the uniform shop for a no-obligation chat.
