Caring Curious Courageous

Enabling all children to learn and grow

Friday 2nd May, 2025

Dear Families,

I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the brighter mornings we’ve finally been gifted. After a spell of grey skies and drizzle, the sunshine has returned—bringing with it a real sense of energy and optimism around the school. The playground is buzzing with activity, the field is drying out nicely, and the children are relishing every opportunity to be outdoors again.

When I pass by EDP (Extended Day Provision) first thing in the morning—or pop in for a quick visit—I’m always struck by the warm and welcoming atmosphere. With the scent of freshly toasted bread in the air, the sight of chia bowls, banana splits (topped with yoghurt, granola, and all sorts of colourful delights!), and the happy hum of conversation, it’s honestly hard to leave! It’s a lovely start to the day for so many of our children.

Following on from the recent presentations on school funding, here is a letter with more information about the funding (lack of funding) for the free school meals' initiative. Please take a moment to read it as we need your help.

With the sun finally making a proper appearance, please do remember to send your child to school with a hat and with suncream already applied. They are very welcome to bring a small bottle of suncream with them to reapply later in the day—particularly if they’ll be outside for PE or lunchtime play. While we’re happy to supervise, staff aren’t able to apply it for them directly.

Looking ahead, the Magic of Music fundraiser is just around the corner, and excitement is building! It promises to be a joyful celebration of our pupils’ talents and a great community event. Further down in the newsletter, you’ll find all the details you need. Tickets are available here.

A quick reminder about school shoes: we’ve had some very spirited discussions among the children about what qualifies as proper footwear! Just to clarify: if your child is taking part in a sports club or has PE that day, they should wear sports trainers. On other days, we kindly ask that they come in school shoes, in line with our uniform policy. You can find the full policy here if you need a refresher.

Wishing you all a relaxing and—fingers crossed—sunny Bank Holiday weekend. I hope you get a chance to enjoy some time outdoors, perhaps with an ice cream in hand!

Warmest wishes,
Frances

Quality of Questioning

Our main teaching and learning priority this academic year has been on Assessment for Learning with the aim of embedding key strategies that help teachers check children's understanding in lessons.

Last week's CPD session focused on the quality of our questioning, because we know that strong Assessment for Learning relies on strong teacher questioning. We reflected on the types of questions that we ask in our classrooms, e.g. open/closed, process/probing and the value that these questions have. The teachers looked at which types of questions encourage children to:

  • think more deeply
  • make links in the learning
  • reflect on the method they used
  • explain the how or the why

The question matrix below was a useful tool that teachers used in the session to develop their planned questioning.

Some families might find the questions matrix useful to use at home.

  • How might the character be feeling?
  • Why will happen if...?
  • How might you find the answer in a different way?
  • What might happen if you change xxx in the experiment?
  • Why/how did that knowledge help you?
  • How could you improve this sentence/word?

The Extended Day Provision

The EDP has got off to a great start! Kate Cox has designed a nutritious menu that the children can make themselves. The focus is on ensuring there is a balance of protein, carbohydrates and fruit or vegetables. The children have made a variety of breakfast, including avocado on toast, banana split, chia bowl, rainbow salad, to name a few. The after school snack has included raw pizza, open sandwiches, chicken and mango boats and they were delicious! The children have grown in confidence in their food preparation and have been asking their families to make them at home!

One child has even been quoted saying 'the breakfast is paradise'!

If you would like to book your child a place, please go on to your School Money account. Any questions, please email edp@vineyard.richmond.sch.uk

Music News!

Instrumental lesson payments

Instrumental lessons are up and running. If you haven’t done so, please pay your tuition invoice on SchoolMoney. Thank you!

Magic of Music Fundraiser

We are very grateful to The Friends of the Vineyard for their fundraiser evening on Wednesday 14 May whose proceeds will go to music initiatives.

With the money we plan to:

- increase bursaries, for more children to be able to access instrumental lessons

- build an instrument library, so families can hire instruments in the short term

- make soundproofing and aesthetic improvements to the Music Hub

With enough support, we could also build an entirely new, soundproofed, standalone music classroom (STPP). This would increase the capacity for drumkit lessons, and be suitable for group tuition, Rocksteady sessions and LAMDA. It would also provide a valuable income stream to the school.

The fundraiser evening includes an auction with some amazing items, including opera tickets, afternoon tea at The Bingham, and a weekend in the South of France!

Super Saturday Update

The funding from the Opening Schools Project ended mid-way through this academic year.

The aim of the project was to open a safe space for Vineyard families to play.

Vineyard families were welcome to invite their close community (neighbour, cousin) to join in with them on the school grounds.

Super Saturday had two foci – a wheel-based project (cycling, skateboarding, inline skates, scooters) and a Table Tennis project.

For the project to continue at its most basic level, and to be sustainable, it requires financial support.

The grounds are opened by school staff. The outside space is monitored by JA Sports, who do not directly coach, but instead facilitate play. The site is maintained by cleaners the following morning.

There are 381 families in our school community. For a minimum contribution of £6.00 per family, the grounds will remain open for the remainder of this academic year. It might be that Saturdays do not fit in with your family calendar this year. However, I would ask that you consider whether you think the idea is a good one, and one that you could support for others to enjoy. A School Money reminder will be sent for you to click into next week.

In the future

Academic year 25/26, the cost per family would be only £13.00 for the school to be open every Saturday term time from 9:30-12 midday, giving families the opportunity to use the space.

Safeguarding- NSPCC Phone Safety Tool Kit

If you are going to be getting your child a phone, here is some advice from NSPCC about how to ensure your child stays safe on their phone.

Please note that from September 2025, no child will be allowed to bring a smartphone or watch on site.

Making A Pledge for Earth Day

The Green Team delivered a fantastic assembly last week and inspired the children to make a pledge about one small change they could make to support the environment. Sometimes children can feel overwhelmed by environmental issues and by encouraging them to think about a small change that they can make, we can help avoid climate anxiety. Well done to the Green Team!
