Read on to find out what we have been up to in Reception this week.

Over the past two weeks in Reception, we have been busy exploring the world of plants and minibeasts, while continuing to build our phonics and maths skills. The children have been learning about the three main parts of a plant – the roots, stem, and leaves – and what a plant needs to grow, such as light, water, space and air. We have enjoyed drawing and labelling the different parts of a plant, using what we've learned to create colourful and informative diagrams.

A highlight of our learning has been the arrival of caterpillars in the classroom! The children are excited to observe their transformation and are beginning to understand the stages of the butterfly life cycle. This has sparked a great interest in minibeasts, and we have begun to explore different types, their habitats, and their roles in nature.

In phonics, we have been introduced to the new sounds ea and oi. The children have been practising these sounds through games, reading, and writing activities to help build their confidence and fluency.

In maths, we have been focusing on number bonds to 10. Using a variety of resources and activities, the children have been exploring different ways to make 10 and are developing a strong foundation in early addition.

We also had a special visit from three parents who came in to talk to us about Passover. This was a lovely opportunity for the children to learn about different cultures and traditions, which ended with them searching for a piece of matzo!

The children in Topaz and Jade also began Vineyard Adventurers, where they learned how to safely identify brambles and stinging nettles while eagerly exploring the exciting new outdoor space.

Key messages:

  • A reminder that children are not allowed to play on the climbing frame or use the school equipment before and after school, including siblings.

  • Please continue to give us donations of clean recycling to add to our junk modeling, as we use it throughout the year—small boxes, toilet rolls, etc. However, we cannot accept anything that once contained nuts, eggs, or fish.

  • We are going to Urban Farm on 15th June. Please let us know if your child gets travel sick so that we can put provisions in place.

  • If you would like to be a ‘mystery reader,’ please fill in this link here.

  • Please remember that children should not be eating breakfast as they come in through the school gates.

  • Here is a reminder of the Vineyard Adventurers sessions:

Please make sure your child comes to school with full length trousers and                  something with sleeves. Waterproof trousers are desirable, but not necessary;            as long as their legs and arms are covered, to protect them from stinging                    nettles.
