Celebrating Black History Month

This week, we have been celebrating Black History Month with a series of vibrant, inspiring workshops, including the immersive programme Hidden Figures delivered by Bigfoot Arts Education.
The children journeyed through time as ‘Time Investigators’, uncovering remarkable, often overlooked figures from Black British history, from the Roman Britain Ivory Bangle Lady to nurse and activist Dame Elizabeth Anionwu.
In these lively sessions, the children used drama, discovery bags, artefacts and role-play to bring these stories to life.
Here are some of the things our pupils said:
“I loved pretending to travel through time and discovering how people even in Roman Britain made a difference. It made me feel like I can do something great too,” said a Year 3 pupil.
“I thought it was fascinating to find out how many black people were around in Roman Britain times and that some were rich and some were poor,” said Mitchell in Year 6.
“The acting was really entertaining!” said Lily in Year 3.
“It was very fun when one of them got stuck behind a time machine and whenever they got more points, they did a funny dance!” said Nico in Year 3.
“I thought it was sad how many black people got forgotten, even though they did great things,” said Sophia in Year 6.
“I enjoyed having to help the characters get back to the future. We need to talk about them (hidden figures) more,” said Chayce in Year 3.
We were delighted by how engaged and thoughtful the children were, asking excellent questions, working together and reflecting on how the past connects to the present. The workshops helped foster empathy, understanding and the belief that each of us has the power to effect change.
Thank you to all the staff and to Bigfoot Arts Education for making the week so memorable. We look forward to continuing our learning and celebrating diversity throughout the year.
