Reception News

Read on to find out what has been happening in reception.

We can hardly believe how quickly the first half-term flew by! We are really proud of how well the children have transitioned into school life, embracing the new routines and showing wonderful enthusiasm for learning.

In phonics, we continue to learn our set 1 sounds. We have learnt u, b, f, e, l, h, r and j and are using any opportunity to practise our ‘Fred Talk’ to blend the sounds we know together (e.g. m-a-t = mat).

We enjoyed using the autumn treasures we collected over half term to write a simple sentence and have been working hard on practising the correct letter formation of our names.

In maths, we continue to work on subitising and using lots of practical ways to look at how numbers are composed.  We have also started to compare sets of objects thinking about ‘more than’ and ‘fewer than’.

In our topic lessons, we have been learning about the four seasons and it has been fantastic to hear the children talking about the changes they observe in the world around them.  We used different types of printing to create autumn trees and hedgehogs. Learning about how people celebrate ‘Diwali’ has been a highlight and we made colourful rangoli and henna patterns using a variety of materials. The children have also learnt about Bonfire night and in the outside area used chalks to draw large firework pictures on the ground.

Messages:

  • Please can you give us donations of clean recycling to add to our junk modelling as we use it throughout the year – small boxes, toilet rolls etc. However, we cannot accept anything that once contained nuts, eggs or fish.

  • A reminder that children are not to play on the climbing frame or use the school equipment before and after school, including siblings.

  • If your child has borrowed any clothes, please make sure these are washed and returned.

  • Every Friday, your child will come home with the four new sounds we learnt that week. Please spend time at home with your child asking them to tell you the sounds they have learnt and also encourage your child to complete the correct letter formation for each letter. At the top of the worksheet is the rhyme to help the children to remember how to form them correctly. These are for you to keep at home and do not need to be returned to school.

  • Every Friday, we will celebrate any star moments your child has had at home e.g. learnt to ride a bike, helped their siblings at home, started a new club, used wonderful manners to a relative etc. The spare ‘Star Moments’ sheets can be found hanging on the door if you run out.

  • This week your child will bring home a reading folder. Children will bring home new books every Thursday and these books need to be returned the following Wednesday. Please listen to your child read at least 5 times a week and record their progress in the reading record. Further information about this is outlined in the reading record.

Dates:

  • 3rd December (8.45–9.15 am): open classroom
