Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 1 & 2 this week.

Year 1

It was lovely seeing all the families during our Family Evening sessions. Thank you for making the time to come and meet with us! Since then we have been immersing ourselves with lots of learning, from creating posters to combat plastic pollution in English, to learning about what life was like in the 1950’s. Here is a glimpse of what we have done in the last 2 weeks.

We finished off our book on ‘Somebody Swallowed Stanley’ by creating posters to combat plastic pollution. We made sure to use exclamation marks to express the importance of the issue and how frustrating it can be. We added facts as well as points on how to help this issue. We are sure you’ll be able to spot our posters as we will be using them as a prop in our class assemblies. We made sure they were also eye-catching. We are now starting the book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ and looking at the features of a letter.

In maths, we consolidated our learning of bridging across 10s within numbers to 50, finding one more and one less where the tens digit changes. We then moved onto learning about length and height - comparing length and height, measuring length and height using non-standardised objects, and finally learning how to measure with a ruler using the word centimetres. Maybe we could extend this learning to measuring objects at home with a ruler.

In history, we have been learning about life in the 1950’s and what this might have looked like. We are learning about Islam in our RE lessons, talking about Ramadan and the celebration of Eid, which is relevant to the current times as our Muslim friends will be participating in the Ramadan festivities now.

Year 2

Year 2 has had a busy couple of weeks! On Wednesday, we had a workshop about the Great Fire of London, where the children built on their knowledge of the event, as well as taking part in dance lessons and relay races. Last week, we had an exciting trip to Bocketts Farm. The children were able to see and pet a wide range of animals, as well as enjoy a tractor tour of the farm. Why not ask your child which animals they enjoyed seeing the most? We also had the pleasure of a visit from Annemarie Anang, the author of I Am Nefertiti and Dance Just Like So! The children were introduced to her books and explored the importance of names and their meanings. They also had the opportunity to learn a song together and ask Annemarie lots of curious questions.

In English, we have come to the end of our Great Fire of London writing by producing a diary entry written from the perspective of a child in 1666. The children thought about how people in this time might have felt, as well as the order of events that led to the fire beginning, and what followed.

The children have been busy learning the two-times table during our maths learning. We’ve practised counting in twos, and they’ve begun to recognise patterns and solve multiplication problems such as 2 x 3, 2 x 5, and beyond. Another important concept we’ve introduced is doubling and halving. The children have learned that doubling a number means adding that number to itself (e.g., 4 doubled is 8), while halving means dividing a number into two equal parts (e.g., half of 6 is 3). These skills help strengthen their understanding of numbers and build a solid foundation for more complex operations later on. We've also explored the difference between odd and even numbers. The children now understand that even numbers can be divided into two equal parts (e.g., 4, 6, 8), while odd numbers have one leftover when divided by two (e.g., 3, 5, 7). Recognising these patterns will help them with their multiplication and division skills. Next week, we will be looking at the 5 and 10 times tables. The children will learn to count in fives and tens, making it easier for them to solve multiplication problems such as 5 x 2, 5 x 4, 10 x 3, and so on. They will also start to notice the patterns in the multiples of 5 and 10, which will help them become more confident in their times table knowledge.

Across the wider curriculum, Year 2 has investigated the absorbency of materials and represented their results using multilink cubes. For each teaspoon of water absorbed by a material, the children added a cube to their tower. In turn, this created a model that looked and acted similarly to a bar chart. In history, the children have explored Samuel Pepys’ diary, producing a soundscape to help them imagine what it would have been like to be in London during the Great Fire. Finally, in RE, we have been looking at key features of the gurdwara, identifying the manji sahib, chaur, langar hall, shoe and wash room, and of course, the Holy book—the Guru Granth Sahib. We are looking forward to visiting the gurdwara next week, bringing with us our vegetarian lunches and lots of questions.

We wish a Happy Persian New Year to all those celebrating!
