LKS2 News

Read on to find out about what has been happening in years 3 & 4.

Year 3

Our addition and subtraction topic in maths is now drawing to a close, and the children have been consolidating their learning with growing confidence. Once they have identified which operation a question requires, we have been focusing on choosing efficient calculation methods and checking answers using strategies such as estimation. Practising key number facts at home—especially number bonds to 10 and 100—will continue to support this. These will help the children quickly find complements to 100, such as 36 + 64.

In English, we are excited to be writing our first full narrative of the year. Using Stone Age Boy as inspiration, the children are developing their own versions of the story. They are using fronted adverbials to describe cave settings, ambitious adjectives to bring new characters to life, and inverted commas accurately to indicate speech. Their creativity and attention to detail have been wonderful to see.

Our history lessons have taken us beyond the Stone Age and into the Bronze Age. The children have explored how the discovery and use of metal transformed daily life—changing tools, farming, and marking the shift from a hunter–gatherer lifestyle to more settled communities.

In science, we have investigated different types of rocks and classified them based on how they were formed over thousands of years. The children have approached this with real scientific curiosity, using observations and comparisons to deepen their understanding.

Last week, we also attended a workshop as part of our commitment to Anti-Bullying Week. We were extremely proud of the maturity, empathy and thoughtful discussion shown by the children as they explored these important themes.

Year 4

What a brilliant week we’ve had in Year 4! The children have shown fantastic enthusiasm across all of their subjects, and we’re really proud of the effort they are putting into their learning.

In maths, we have been focusing on multiplication and division, especially the 3, 6 and 9 times tables. The children have been exploring the patterns and connections between these facts, such as how the 6s link to doubling the 3s, and how the 9s follow a clear number pattern. Their confidence is growing, and we encourage regular practice at home to help these facts become fully secure.

In English, the children have completed their own thrilling narratives inspired by Escape from Pompeii. We have been extremely impressed by their creativity, use of description, and ability to build suspense. It has been wonderful to see them apply everything they have learned about settings, characters, and powerful vocabulary.

This work has linked closely to our history topic, where we evaluated the four attempted Roman invasions of Britain. The children discussed why some attempts were more successful than others and used evidence to justify their thinking. Their historical reasoning skills are really developing.

In RE, we continued our learning about Sikhism, and the children are very excited for our upcoming visit to the Buddhapadipa Temple in Twickenham on 4th December (AM).

In DT, the children had great fun practising safe cutting, grating and peeling techniques. They showed excellent focus and teamwork throughout these activities.

In science, we have been exploring solids, liquids and gases, thinking carefully about what the particles in each state look like and how they behave. The children enjoyed comparing the three states and role playing as the particles themselves (see photos!).

Well done, Year 4, for another fantastic week!
