Read on to find out what we have been up to in Reception this week.
We have had a wonderful and sunny first 2 weeks back in Reception! As always, we have been very busy and in particular have enjoyed gardening and watering the learning garden as we head into spring. We have begun our new topic for this term of ‘everyday superheroes’, we started by looking at real superheroes and discussing their powers. We then looked at everyday heroes and people who help us such as police officers, trainer drivers and doctors. We have incorporated our new topic theme into our free learning and have had lots of fun using the superheroes headquarters in the learning garden! We love dressing up in capes, masks and costumes and flying around the garden.
In maths, we have continued to practise ordering and counting numbers to 8, being careful to use 1:1 correspondence and not skip any numbers. We have also started to look at 1 more and 1 less, to help us we have been building number towers like steps to show how when we count we add 1 more each time. This has helped us to become familiar with finding 1 more and less with numbers to 8.
In our writing, we have been designing our very own superheroes! We have lots of fun choosing masks, capes, outfits and colours. Using a mixture of red words and our new phonics sounds we wrote a super sentence describing who our superhero was and what their special power is. We even had a go at labelling some of the features in our design. Our writing has improved so much and we are very proud of the sentences we have written. We can’t wait for you to see them in family meetings next week! In phonics, we have now learnt all of the set 2 sounds; ay,ee,igh,ow,oo (zoo),oo (book), ar,or,ir,air,ou and oy. We have practised learning these sounds on their own and also spotting them in words.

After half term we are starting our new topic ‘People who help us’. We would love for any parents who have a job such as a doctor, police officer, firefighter, dentist, builder etc., to talk to the children about the work they do and why it’s important. If you would be happy to do this, please email eyfs@vineyard.richmond.sch.uk

Lots of children are bringing in toys from home; we do not advise this as they get lost/broken and children get very upset. If children take them out of their bag, they will be confiscated until the end of the day.
