Read on to find out what we have been up to in Reception this week.

Over the past two weeks, Reception has continued to explore the exciting world of dinosaurs! Our topic has sparked lots of curiosity and enthusiasm, and the children have enjoyed a wide range of activities to support their learning.

We began by looking at different types of dinosaurs and comparing them – discussing their size, their distinctive features, and whether they were carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores. Using a trundle wheel, we took our learning outside to the playground to get a real sense of how enormous some dinosaurs were compared to us! In the Creation Station, children have been busy using a range of materials to create their own dinosaurs. From junk modelling to paper dinosaurs with split-pin joints, we’ve seen some fantastic imagination and design skills at work.

In English lessons, we are continuing to review the Reception ‘red words’  and have been exploring the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts. Using what we’ve learned in our topic lessons, we’ve started creating our own class dinosaur information books, full of fascinating facts which will soon proudly take their place in our classroom book corners. We have also recently started ‘storybook’ sessions. These will continue into Year 1 and help build reading fluency. Children pair up to read a phonics book matched to their reading level and take turns to read, supporting each other as they go.

In maths, we’ve continued using ‘rekenreks’ to practise subitising and finding different ways to make numbers up to 20. We’ve also been working on counting up to 30 and ordering numbers to 20 correctly.

It’s been a fantastic fortnight full of learning, creativity, and dinosaur discoveries!

Key messages:

  • A reminder that children are not allowed to play on the climbing frame or use the school equipment before and after school, including siblings.

  • Please continue to give us donations of clean recycling to add to our junk modeling, as we use it throughout the year—small boxes, toilet rolls, etc. However, we cannot accept anything that once contained nuts, eggs, or fish.

  • As the weather most days is hot and sunny please ensure your child comes to school with suncream already on and a hat to wear on the playground. They must have a water bottle.

  • Here is a reminder of the Vineyard Adventurers sessions:

Please make sure your child comes to school with full length trousers and something with sleeves. Waterproof trousers are desirable, but not necessary; as long as their legs and arms are covered, to protect them from stinging nettles.
