KS1 News

Come and find out what KS1 have been up to!

Year 1

The Year 1 children had a splendid time at Barnes Literature Festival. We enjoyed a delicious picnic before watching Steven Lenton and Tracey Corderoy tell us the stories of Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam. The children loved becoming illustrators in the interactive draw along creating some uncanny drawings of Shifty McGifty.

In preparation for the upcoming STEM week, we have been studying Iggy Peck Architect in English. We have learnt about contraction apostrophes and used conjunctions to give our reasoning about whether the structures Iggy built are stable or unstable using our prior knowledge from DT. Money has been our focus in maths where we have been recognising the coins and notes, comparing the value of money and starting to count in coins. Any opportunity to practise using money at home with your children will be very beneficial. In science, we have been interpreting data to compare the average rainfall, days of sunshine and temperature across the seasons in Richmond. We have continued to build on our knowledge of the history of transport by listening to the story of the Wright brothers and the first flight. We then thought about why the Wright brothers are significant and recorded our favourite facts. In computing, we learnt about how to extend a series of commands together on Scratch Junior.

Key Messages

  • Key vocab: contraction apostrophes, coins, notes, value, average, stable structure, flight

  • KIRFs: telling the time to half past and revising o’clock

  • STEM Week 26th-  Friday 30th May dress up as a scientific discovery/maths symbol/ equation AND science fair after school. Please bring in science experiments on Friday 30th May.

Year 2

It has been a lovely week in Year 2 where the children have continued to be collaborative, enthusiastic and inquisitive in their learning. As STEM week approaches, the children have been thinking about their scientific theory they might dress up as and an experiment they could try at home. We have been asking ourselves - How are we scientists or mathematicians at home? In English, we are reading the book Ada Twist and learning to be curious and interested about the world around us. They have written scientific facts found in the book about space and materials, and they have described Ada twist using strong adjectives and adverbs. In DT, the children have persevered in their sewing skills and at times found it really tricky but they have not given up. We hope practising their sewing skills will enable them to feel confident when sewing their own puppets in a few weeks. In PE, we have practised throwing and batting skills for a few weeks. We are slowly working towards playing a game of cricket together.
