KS1 News

Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 1 & 2 this week.

Year 1

What an exciting two weeks we’ve had in Year 1! Firstly, a huge well done to all the children for completing the Phonics Screening Check. Everyone tried their very best and we are incredibly proud of their hard work and positive attitude. To celebrate, we enjoyed a well-earned treat on Friday - a refreshing ice lolly in the sunshine! Friday was also our fun-filled Numbers Day. The children took part in a range of engaging numeracy activities, exploring patterns, solving puzzles, and practising their mental maths. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and teamwork.

In English, using The Smile Shop for inspiration, we created detailed story maps and focused on beginning their stories with a character description to bring their writing to life. We explored different adjectives to describe our character and the market he visits. We have started to write up a draft of the story making sure to add all the writing features we have learned so far.

In maths, we have finished off our learning about position and direction using languages such as left, right, forward and backwards. Now we are learning about place value to 100 and partitioning numbers into tens and ones.

In history, we explored the first flight, learning about the Montgolfier brothers and the Wright brothers. In DT, we have started planning our own stable structures by thinking carefully about materials and design. In science, we observed and grouped different plants by their physical features and went on a plant hunt to identify wild and garden plants. In RE, we learned about the key features of a synagogue, a special place of worship for Jewish people.

Year 2

What a fantastic week we have had in Year 2! Our Number Day was a huge success, with lots of children coming in amazing outfits – well done, everyone! We also enjoyed a super fun number afternoon, where the children engaged in lots of exciting maths activities.

In maths, we have been learning all about fractions. The children are now confident in identifying unit fractions (like 1/2 and 1/4) and non-unit fractions (like 2/3). Next week, we will begin our new topic on time.

In English, we continue exploring the story The Bear and the Piano. The children have started planning their own narratives and will be publishing their stories this week – we can’t wait to see their wonderful writing! Next week, we will begin a new story called Speak Up!

In history, we started our topic on the Tudors. The children loved taking part in a role play, where they became characters from Tudor times and joined a feast with the monarch, including King Henry VIII himself! It was a great way to bring history to life. In DT, we are working on our wacky windmills project. The children are experimenting with different materials to find out which is strongest for building their structures. Thank you so much to everyone who donated recycling materials – your support is appreciated! In RE, we have been learning about Hinduism, focusing on values this week. In PSHE, our topic is ‘Changing Me’, where we are exploring how humans change over time. Next week, we will be learning about different body parts.
