Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 1 & 2 this week.

Year 1

As we wrap up a fantastic Year 1, a huge thank you to all our families for your amazing support. Whether it’s volunteering on trips, sharing hot chocolate in Forest School, donating shoeboxes for DT, cheering us on during a very hot Festival of Sports day, or helping with phonics practice at home — your involvement has truly made a difference and we couldn’t be more proud of how much the children have achieved this year!

The children have impressed us with their growth and enthusiasm for learning. They’ve become confident writers, creating stories with varied sentence openers and ambitious vocabulary, writing clear instructions, and exploring poetry creatively.

In maths, they’ve mastered numbers to 100, finding one more and one less, using number lines, counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s, and learning about halves, quarters, time, money, measurement, and addition and subtraction within 20.

Across the wider curriculum, the children have flourished as artists inspired by Yayoi Kusama, Henri Matisse, and Andy Goldsworthy. In DT, they built mechanisms and stable structures. Science covered the human body, animals, plants, and seasons. They explored different religions in RE and became confident programmers using Scratch Jr in computing. PSHE helped them understand their feelings and become kinder friends.

History lessons took them back to the Victorians, the 1950s, and the history of flight, while geography introduced maps, continents, oceans, and hot and cold places.

It’s been a year full of learning and joy, and we’re grateful to have shared it with you. Wishing you a restful summer and an exciting start to Year 2. Goodbye for now, and thank you for being part of this special journey!

Messages:

Please drop children off to their classrooms by 8.45am. If you are running late, do not go to the classrooms after 8.45 and instead go through the office as this can be disruptive to the learning.

You can keep the children’s reading records and spelling books for Year 1.

As we reach the end of Year 1 and will be continuing to enrich our Year 1 learning environment, we would be very grateful for any donations of items to support our continuous provision areas. If you’re having a clear-out or have any spare resources, we would love to receive:

Role Play: Dressing-up clothes, puppets, small chairs, old handbags or toy kitchen items
Construction: Small cardboard boxes, Lego or building sets, wooden blocks, toy tools
Creative: Paper, ribbons, buttons, fabric scraps, paints, crayons

Outdoor/Mud Kitchen: Old pots and pans, spoons, buckets, gardening tools
Small World/Loose Parts Play: Toy animals, vehicles, natural materials like shells or pebbles, wooden rings

All donations help make our learning spaces more fun and engaging for the children. Thank you so much for your support!

Year 2

As we come to the end of a fantastic Year 2, the Year 2 teachers would like to reflect on what has been an amazing year! As we sat down to write this, so many funny, heartwarming, and proud moments came to mind. Choosing standout moments was very hard, but the Year 2 teachers gave it their best try…

  1. We loved seeing the children’s writing develop—especially their second-to-last piece, a story inspired by Bear and the Piano. It was marvelous to see so many capital letters placed correctly and the use of ambitious adjectives! During publishing time, which used to be a laborious task, the children focused so well on their handwriting and produced some truly standout pieces.

  2. We were blown away by our Christmas performance where the children delivered their lines so confidently and sang their songs without forgetting the words.

  3. We have seen our children become ‘allies’ on the playground and stand up for their peers. Choosing not to be a bystander, the children have been encouraged to help each other or seek adult help if they encounter issues on the playground!

  4. We felt incredibly proud of our trip to Hampton Court Palace, where it was clear that each child had special interests in particular Tudor monarchs. The children asked thoughtful questions and listened attentively. Despite the heat, they showed great resilience and bravely used public transport—albeit a little noisily—without complaint!

  5. We loved watching our young engineers work in teams to build windmills. With minimal instruction, the children problem-solved brilliantly, ensuring their sails moved freely around the axle, just like a real windmill should!

And the list goes on and on! More than anything, we have loved seeing their friendships blossom, hearing their laughter fill the classroom, and watching their resilience shine through. They have become a special team who truly enjoy their time at school.

Now, parents… what can we say to you! Thank you for your continued support, encouragement, and partnership throughout the year. This year, we have had more parent volunteers for trips than ever before—your support has truly been felt by all of us! We feel incredibly lucky to work with such wonderful and supportive families. Whenever we have needed help, even at short notice, you have always stepped up, and for that, we are truly grateful. Thank you for helping make our jobs easier and for being such an important part of our Year 2 journey!

We wish you all the very best for the summer holidays and look forward to hearing about all the adventures Year 3 will bring!
