Read on to find out about what has been happening in years 3 & 4.

Year 3

This term, the children have shown wonderful enthusiasm and curiosity in their learning. A true highlight was our exciting trip to the Royal Ballet School. After a beautiful walk through Richmond Park, we arrived ready to learn more about the world of dance. The children demonstrated excellent perseverance throughout the day and were fascinated as the school presented typical ballet moves and explained how much ballet means to the students. It was an inspiring experience that sparked lots of thoughtful conversations back in the classroom.

In English, we have finished reading The Pied Piper, and the children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the story of such an interesting and mysterious character. They loved describing the strange and captivating man, thinking carefully about how to create suspense and detail in their writing. Some children were so inspired that they even wrote their own Hamelin stories at home.

In Maths, the children have worked incredibly hard to measure and calculate length. They have confidently applied their previous learning, including repeated addition, doubles, and their knowledge of shape to support their understanding. It has been wonderful to see their determination and growing confidence when solving problems. We are very proud of their progress and hope they are looking forward to exploring fractions next half term!

In Geography, our final stop on our journey was comparing Florida and Alaska. The children enjoyed discovering what life is like in these very different places, thinking about climate, landscape, and daily life. They were intrigued by the contrasts between the warm, sunny beaches of Florida and the icy, snowy landscapes of Alaska. Their thoughtful discussions and comparisons showed how much their geographical understanding has developed this term.

Year 4

Last week, each class made the short, chilly walk to Terrace Gardens in order to photograph the view and then to sketch what they had photographed.  We chose a glorious day, the children worked hard on their sketching techniques and there are now some fabulous drawings on display.

We have been focussing on poetry in English and using the book “Lost Words” as our inspiration.  The children are using figurative language to create an acrostic poem about a polar bear, a king cobra or the coral reef.  It has been great to see the children strive to be more ambitious writers and incorporate the techniques that we have been learning in class.

In maths, we have been finding perimeters of every day objects, using different methods to calculate the perimeter and learning how to find perimeters when some measurements are missing.  We have now moved on to our new fractions topic, starting off by re-capping vocabulary, finding the whole and counting on above 1 in fractions.

Having looked at different parts of the River Thames last week from the source, to the middle course running through London and on to the mouth of the river, our rivers topic concluded this week with a comparison of the River Thames and the River Nile.

Thank you for providing the mirrors which enabled us to examine our own teeth and work out how many adult teeth we had and what teeth had grown in place of our milk teeth.  Then, looking at the shape and size of the four main types of teeth, we worked out what job each set of teeth did and how they would help us to tear, rip, chew and grind our food.

Finally, we had a lot of fun on Number Day (particularly wearing all the 6 and 7 costumes!).  The children in Year 4 grouped up with children from Year 6 to participate in a maths escape room activity located throughout the school.  The children then tried to crack the code with the clues that they had gathered and will benefit from some extra play this week as a reward.
