Reception News

Read on to find out what has been happening in reception.
Over the past 2 weeks in Reception, we have been incredibly busy and working very hard across all areas of our learning. In phonics, the children have learnt the set 2 sounds ay, ee, igh, ow, oo (as in zoo) and oo (as in book), as well as the double consonants ll, ff, ss and zz. We have been focusing on recognising these sounds, reading them confidently in words, and using them carefully in our writing. It has been wonderful to see the children growing in confidence and enthusiasm as they apply their phonics skills independently.
In our topic work, we have continued learning about Trinidad and Tobago and comparing it to the United Kingdom. The children enjoyed thinking about which animals live in each country and discussing similarities and differences. We also explored the types of food eaten in Trinidad and Tobago and were particularly fascinated by learning about shark bake, which sparked lots of excitement and discussion! This week, we also looked closely at the weather in Trinidad and Tobago and were amazed to discover that there are only two seasons there: wet and dry.
In English, the children have been working extremely hard on practising their “I can see…” sentences, using their phonics knowledge to write simple sentences with increasing independence. You may have already spotted some of this fantastic work proudly displayed in the Golden Gallery. Well done, Reception, for another brilliant week of learning!

Please can you continue to give us donations of clean recycling to add to our junk modelling as we use it throughout the year - small boxes, toilet rolls etc. However, we cannot accept anything that once contained nuts, eggs or fish.
-
If your child has borrowed any clothes, please make sure these are washed and returned. We are running very low!

Every Friday, we celebrate any star moments your child has had at home e.g. learnt to ride a bike, helped their siblings at home, started a new club, used wonderful manners to a relative etc. The spare ‘Star Moments’ sheets can be found hanging on the door if you run out.
- Please continue to bring in reading folders every Wednesday and these will be returned with new books on Thursdays. Please listen to your child read at least 5 times a week and record their progress in the reading record.
- Upcoming date - Thursday 12th February We will be having our own Reception Carnival Day to conclude our Trinidad and Tobago topic. The children can come to school in their own brightly coloured clothes. More details to follow.
