Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 5 & 6 this week.

Year 5

Year 5 have already achieved so much in just two weeks!

In maths, the focus has been on identifying equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages. The children have been honing their problem-solving skills through challenging ‘real-life’ maths problems, using the skills of comparing and finding equivalents.

In English, the children have been practising their eloquent speaking and listening skills through lively debates about a variety of relevant topics. Planning and writing arguments about whether or not animals should be kept in zoos has sparked some reflective thinking, as well as the opportunity to practise P.E.E (Point Evidence, Explain)!

Science lessons have sparked curiosity as the children further explored the topic of changing materials. Dissolving a range of solids in liquids and experimenting with the impact of heat on this process. They have thoroughly enjoyed this hands-on approach to practise a range of scientific skills.

Meanwhile in D&T, the children were excited to receive a special design brief from John Lewis to create a small fabric case. They have been preparing their designs by specifying individual design criteria and conducting online research of existing products.

This week has been particularly special as we celebrated Book Week. We were privileged to welcome the wonderful author and poet Coral Rumble into the classroom. She captivated the children with her storytelling and insights into the creative writing process, hopefully inspiring many budding authors. The excitement continues to build as the children prepare for the Vineyard Book Day on Friday, where they will have the opportunity to dress up.

Year 6

After a well-deserved break, Year 6 has jumped straight back into learning with enthusiasm and curiosity. The past two weeks have been filled with exciting lessons, engaging discussions, and a celebration of reading.

In maths, the focus has been on angles and shapes. The children have been honing their problem-solving skills by finding missing angles in triangles, quadrilaterals, and various diagrams. They are now progressing to an exploration of circles and 3D shapes, investigating their properties and real-world applications.

Science lessons have sparked curiosity as the children further explored the topic of electricity. Using a range of components, they have built different types of circuits and conducted experiments to understand the impact of voltage. They have thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this hands-on approach.

English lessons have taken an exciting turn as the children have embarked on a brand new genre of discursive texts. Inspired by Kensuke’s Kingdom, they have researched and debated the thought-provoking question: Should parents be allowed to take their children out of school to tour the world on a boat? The discussions have been lively, with well-reasoned arguments on both sides—you can imagine the strong opinions shared!

This week has been particularly special as we celebrated Book Week. We were privileged to welcome the wonderful author and poet Coral Rumble into the classroom. She captivated the children with her storytelling and insights into the creative writing process, hopefully inspiring many budding authors. The excitement continues to build as the children prepare for their final Vineyard Book Day on Friday, where they will have the opportunity to dress up.
