Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 5 & 6 this week.
Year 5
We’re nearing the end of another busy and exciting half term in Year 5 and we wanted to share more of the fantastic learning taking place across the curriculum.
In English, the children have continued their work on The Tempest. They’ve been writing their own play scripts inspired by Shakespeare’s characters and themes. We’ve been really impressed by their creativity and understanding of the text. A special well done to those who have taken their interest even further by writing their own sonnets at home—what a brilliant effort!
In maths, we have recently finished our work on shape, with a focus on translation and reflection. The children have shown excellent reasoning skills in this unit. We are now moving on to decimals and we’re looking forward to seeing how the children apply their place value knowledge in this context.
In science, we’ve been learning about the life cycles of birds and amphibians. The children have enjoyed comparing different species and understanding their unique characteristics. Next week, we’ll be moving on to classifying mammals.
Our computing sessions have been buzzing with excitement as the children begin their final project: building a structure that can be programmed to move using Crumbles. We’ve been so impressed with their growing confidence in coding and their ability to debug their own programs independently.
In art, we’re preparing to start our final portrait pieces. Last week, we explored how colour can affect mood and emotion. The children experimented with mixing paints and grouping colours by the feelings they evoke—an expressive and thoughtful session!

Year 6
We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 pupils for the fantastic effort and resilience they’ve shown during their SATs exams this week. They approached each challenge with focus and determination and we couldn’t be more impressed with their positive attitude.
In art, we’ve continued our exciting study of Favianna Rodriguez, exploring her bold use of colour and powerful themes. The children have enjoyed experimenting with scrape art techniques and have been investigating how different paintbrushes can create varied textures and effects – it’s been a wonderful opportunity to develop their skills and express their ideas.
Alongside their academic achievements, the children have also been busy creating amazing T-shirt designs for our upcoming school trip – their creativity and enthusiasm have really shone through!
Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce the launch of our end-of-year production: Matilda. Rehearsals will begin soon and we can’t wait to share more details with you – it promises to be a brilliant celebration of all their hard work this year.
