Read on to find out what we have been up to in Reception this week.

Over the past two weeks in Reception, we have had a busy and exciting time full of discovery and learning. One of our main focuses has been on minibeast habitats. The children loved exploring where different insects live and what they need to survive. From looking under logs to observing bugs in the outdoor area, we’ve been learning about the fascinating world of tiny creatures and their homes. This has linked beautifully with our science observations, where we have been watching our class butterflies grow. The children have been captivated by the transformation from caterpillars to chrysalises and then to butterflies! It has sparked some wonderful questions and conversations about life cycles and nature.

We also spent time learning about King Charles, including some key facts and his important role in the country. We loved looking at Buckingham Palace and learning about the other members of the royal family.

In maths, we have been consolidating our knowledge of number bonds to 10. The children have been practising different combinations in fun and practical ways, using numicon, counters and games to support their understanding and recall.

In phonics, we have moved on to learning the Set 3 sounds: ea, oi, a-e, i-e, and o-e. The children have enjoyed spotting these ‘chatty friend’ sounds in words and practising their reading and writing with them. We are very proud of how much progress they have made and how enthusiastic they are about their learning. Well done, Reception!

Key messages:

  • A reminder that children are not allowed to play on the climbing frame or use the school equipment before and after school, including siblings.

  • Please continue to give us donations of clean recycling to add to our junk modeling, as we use it throughout the year—small boxes, toilet rolls, etc. However, we cannot accept anything that once contained nuts, eggs, or fish.

  • As the weather most days is hot and sunny please ensure your child comes to school with suncream already on and a hat to wear on the playground.

  • If you would like to be a ‘mystery reader,’ please fill in this link here.

  • Please remember that children should not be eating breakfast as they come in through the school gates.

  • Here is a reminder of the Vineyard Adventurers sessions:

Please make sure your child comes to school with full length trousers and                  something with sleeves. Waterproof trousers are desirable, but not necessary;            as long as their legs and arms are covered, to protect them from stinging                    nettles.
