Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 5 & 6 this week.

Year 5

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a lively and productive week in Year 5. The children have finished their self-portraits in art and the results are truly impressive. A highlight of everyone’s week was watching the first round of Vineyard’s Got Talent. Everyone who performed demonstrated bravery, confidence and musical skill and the audience were perfectly respectful. The semi-final with three acts from year 5 will be happening on Monday 9th.

Our new English text, Beowulf, has already sparked great interest. The children are beginning to explore the plot and themes and have been eager to share their thoughts on the hero’s journey. It is shaping up to be an exciting unit of work.

Geography lessons have been filled with creativity as pupils produced detailed and eye-catching volcano posters. They demonstrated a good understanding of how volcanoes form and the effects they can have on people’s lives.

In Science, the focus has been on human development. This week, we looked closely at the gestation period and the children showed great curiosity as they learned about how babies grow before birth.

Looking ahead, our two-day residential to Hooke Court is just around the corner. We are all very excited for the adventure. Please could all parents check the information and kit lists one last time to make sure your child is fully prepared for the trip. Pictures and updates will be posted on the school’s instagram so ensure you keep an eye out there for photos from Dorset!

As always, thank you for your continued support. We are looking forward to a memorable week ahead.

Year 6

Year 6 had an incredibly busy end to summer 1 and have started summer 2 in the same way. It has been packed with creativity, learning and preparations for the final stretch of our time at The Vineyard.

Before half term, the children produced some truly powerful pieces of writing based on key moments in their lives. Whether it was a performance, a big race, a medical experience or a challenging test, the writing was filled with real emotion and vivid detail. It was wonderful to see how they were able to apply all the skills they have learnt at primary school to this piece of writing.

Our enterprise projects are well underway. Teams have been working hard to bring their business ideas to life. We spoke about market research and the children have been speaking to younger children about their ideas to ensure that they will enjoy the event. This week, our focus is on marketing our ideas by creating eye-catching posters and designing what our final stalls will look like. There's a real buzz of enthusiasm as the children prepare for their enterprise event which takes place next Wednesday afternoon.

This week, we’ve also officially begun rehearsals for our production of Matilda. The catchy songs can often be heard down the Y6 corridor and children are really starting to get into roles. Please help your child to learn their lines as soon as possible - we expect everyone to be off scripts by the time we get back from PGL.

In science, we’ve started our new topic about the human circulatory system and are already asking some brilliant questions to find out more about how the heart works. We revisited MRS GREN and discussed what makes something a living thing.

In RE, we have also started a new topic. We’re exploring sacred texts and beginning to understand their meaning and significance across different religions. We’re especially looking forward to our upcoming visit to a mosque later this half term which is a key part of this topic.

This final half term is shaping up to be full of excitement and memories to last a lifetime!
