Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 3 & 4 this week.
Year 3
We’ve had a fantastic week in Year 3 filled with learning, creative exploration, and new discoveries across our subjects!
As part of our DT project, the children have been learning about food combinations and the importance of taste when designing a sandwich. Last week, they had the opportunity to taste test a range of ingredients and describe them using vocabulary such as sour, savoury, and bitter. It was brilliant to see how adventurous they were with their choices – from trying pickles to beetroot! These taste tests will help them decide on the perfect flavour combinations for their very own sandwich designs in the next few weeks.
In maths, we’ve been exploring angles and learning how to spot right angles, as well as identifying parallel and perpendicular lines. The playground became our outdoor classroom, as children enthusiastically searched for these features in the environment – from climbing frames to hopscotch markings! We’ve also been solving word problems, encouraging the children to apply their maths skills in real-life contexts.
In history, we journeyed back to Ancient Egypt. The children worked together to create a timeline of key events, from the building of the pyramids to the rule of famous pharaohs like Tutankhamun. They showed great curiosity and teamwork as they pieced together the order of events using role play and discussed why each moment in history was significant.
We’re incredibly proud of the children’s engagement and enthusiasm in their learning. Thank you for your continued support at home!

Year 4
We have enjoyed some fantastic highlights this past fortnight at school, particularly when our beautiful site became the backdrop for a country fairground, complete with big wheel and bungee trampolines. Many thanks to the PTA and all the parent helpers for making an unforgettable summer’s evening and a superb Glastonbury festival weekend warm-up.
Year 4 enjoyed a special event last week, when a team of hand-picked crack readers competed against 13 borough teams in the annual Battle of the Books. All the team handled themselves extremely well under pressure and their love of books was evident. We came away without a podium finish, but with resilience developed and also with a powerful insight into how to do better another time - and some kind offers of parent help to assist with this. Bring on next year’s challenge!
Tuesday afternoon, along with record-breaking temperatures, was a very happy occasion for the whole school to come together for the final of Vineyard’s Got Talent. There were many stand-out performances, but our year group most fully got behind our own entry from Leah, Ivy and Amber, as well as a wildcard entry from Defne K, who gave an assured performance of the Moana themetune. Congratulations to all who participated and special congratulations to drummer extraordinaire, Jake, in Year 6.
We have been recording individual sprint times in preparation for next week’s festival of sport. We have also practised our technique for making a success in the tug of war: arranging the team in strength and weight order and thinking about efficient pulling positions. We have had some great contests and technique has won out versus brawn. We look forward to seeing you next Wednesday, from 1.45 - 3.00 pm.
