Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 5 & 6 this week.

Year 5

The first week and a half of Year 5 has been full of energy, excitement, and new beginnings. The children returned to school eager to reconnect with their friends and

settle into their new routines. Our opening week was all about building connections and setting the tone for the year ahead. Through get-to-know-you games, pupils not only strengthened friendships but also opened up opportunities for new ones.

This week, Year 5 embarked on an exciting journey of discovery and learning across a range of engaging topics. In literacy, we delved into Aaron Becker’s imaginative book, Quest. This story has sparked wonderful discussions about exciting adventures and the power of imagination and storytelling. Becker’s whimsical illustrations inspired Year 5 to plan their own creative setting descriptions, using expanded noun phrases and adverbs. Additionally, we practised converting Roman numerals, partitioning and representing numbers up to 100,000 in our maths lessons. It was impressive to see how quickly the children were able to apply what they knew, to solve a range of challenging maths problems.

Our science lessons were focused on grouping and classifying materials based on their properties. We conducted our own experiments to observe the transparency, magnetism, flexibility and hardness of a material. In art, we introduced Fernando Botero, exploring his unique ‘Boterism’ style by analysing and comparing a selection of his bright, still life paintings. The students were fascinated by his distinctive approach to form and proportion. In PE this week, the children were able to work collaboratively to compete in various games, using agility and a diverse range of movements to travel across the hall.

We’re incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, hard work and curiosity the students have shown this week. A big thank you to our wonderful families for your continued support and encouragement. It has been a wonderful start to Year 5 and we look forward to the exciting journey ahead.

Year 6

The first week and a half of Year 6 has been full of energy, excitement, and new beginnings. The children returned to school eager to reconnect with their friends and settle into their new routines. A particular highlight has been using their lockers for the very first time, an important step towards independence and organisation. They have also begun to learn about the wide range of opportunities and events awaiting them in their final year of primary school.

Our opening week was all about building connections and setting the tone for the year ahead. Through get-to-know-you games, pupils not only strengthened friendships but also opened up opportunities for new ones. We revisited key areas of Year 5 learning to refresh important skills before being introduced to the Year 6 curriculum. It was also a real pleasure to meet so many of you during our Meet-the-Teacher and PGL information evenings.

Since then, the children have quickly embraced the rhythm of lessons. In English, Quest by Aaron Becker has inspired rich discussions about imaginative storytelling and creative settings, laying the groundwork for descriptive writing. In reading, our new class novel, Holes, has already sparked curiosity and thoughtful predictions. Mathematics lessons have focused on place value up to 10,000,000, a vital foundation before we move into more complex concepts later this term.

Beyond the core subjects, our linked topics of Brazil, living things, and collage landscapes are helping pupils to see the connections between geography, science, and art. They have explored the vast geographical diversity of Brazil, investigated the fascinating behaviours of microorganisms, and begun experimenting with layering techniques to create textured, vibrant artwork.

It has been a wonderful start to Year 6, and we look forward to the exciting journey ahead.
