It’s been another fantastic start to the new half term, and the children have already been busy making links across their learning. Our new English text, Stone Age Boy, has really captured everyone’s imagination. What would you do if you fell down a cave and ended up in the prehistoric era? Would you know how to protect yourself and survive? Don’t worry as the children are writing a set of instructions on how to make a spear with the limited materials that would have been available at the time! In history, we discussed what ‘prehistory’ means and where the Stone Age fits within it. The class worked together to create a timeline showing the chronological order of events they have learned about so far. This sparked a fascinating discussion about which historical era we live in today – a tricky question indeed! We’ve just completed our science topic on forces by designing paper car racetracks that could only be powered by non-contact forces. The children loved experimenting with magnets to make their cars move. Next, we’ll be turning our attention to rocks and stones for our new topic. In maths, we have been practising the column method for more complex addition and subtraction. The children are becoming much more confident at setting out their calculations neatly and checking their working. The terms ‘find the sum of 257 and 468’ to indicate addition and ‘find the difference between 593 and 286’ to indicate subtraction are being used. In RE, we are exploring Hinduism and Christianity, focusing on Brahman—the creator—and the sacred symbol Aum. Meanwhile, in PE, we’ve been working on gymnastics skills and strength through controlled movements, and in French, we’re learning the names of familiar classroom items. It’s been a busy and exciting start, and we’re proud of how enthusiastically everyone is engaging with their learning! Please note: Change of PE day (outdoor): Monday PE (indoor) : Tuesday Please also remember to tie long hair back to help prevent any potential spread of hair lice. |

Year 4

Welcome back to a brand new half term! The children have returned with great enthusiasm, and it has been wonderful to see them so engaged in our new topics across the curriculum.
In English, we’ve started reading our new class text Escape from Pompeii by Christina Balit. The children have already been captivated by the vivid illustrations and dramatic storyline. Next week, we’ll be using this text as inspiration to write our own setting descriptions of Pompeii before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, followed by an exciting narrative based on the story. This links perfectly with our new History topic – Roman Britain. We’ve begun by exploring what the Roman Empire was and will soon be sequencing the Romans’ attempts (and eventual success) at invading Britain.
In maths, we’re broadening our skills by practising estimating, rounding, and exploring the most efficient methods for addition and subtraction. The children are working hard to explain their reasoning and show confidence in choosing the best strategies for different problems.
In science, we’ve had a popular and thought-provoking lesson researching endangered animals. The children have shown great curiosity and compassion while learning about species at risk and how humans can help. This lesson will conclude our topic on Living Things, and we’ll soon move on to studying States of Matter—comparing solids, liquids, and gases through practical investigations.
In DT, we’ve begun our new food unit! We’ll be learning about seasonal ingredients and healthy eating, culminating in the children designing and making their very own pasta salads.
Finally, in RE, we’re exploring Buddhism and Sikhism, focusing on how these faiths guide people in how to live and behave, through stories, beliefs, and places of worship.
It’s shaping up to be a busy and exciting half term ahead!
