What has been happening in year 1 and year 2?
Year 1
We have had a very busy and exciting week in Year 1, packed full of learning across the curriculum! The children have worked incredibly hard and shown lots of enthusiasm in everything they’ve done.
In English, we started a brand new book called Somebody Swallowed Stanley. The story follows Stanley, a plastic bag, as he goes on an adventure through the ocean and helps us think about the problem of plastic pollution. The children have really enjoyed getting to know Stanley and discussing his journey. This week, we learned all about diary entries and their key features. We talked about how diary entries are written in the first person, how they describe thoughts and feelings, and how we use the suffix -ed to write in the past tense. Our final outcome will be writing our own diary entry linked to Stanley’s adventure.
In maths, we have finished our unit on place value within 20 and have now moved on to addition and subtraction within 20. We have been practising adding by counting on and have also enjoyed playing a game of Snakes and Ladders to help reinforce our skills. We will continue to explore how number bonds and doubles can help us add numbers more confidently.
In science, we have been learning how to group and classify objects. We used fruit to help us with this and explored it using all of our senses, which was great fun!
In PSHE, we have been learning about dreams and goals, thinking about how to set challenges that stretch our learning and how we can overcome and problem solve any obstacles that come our way. In geography, we’ve been learning about storms, and in art, we created collage artwork inspired by Henri Matisse’s The Snail.
Well done, Year 1 – a fantastic week of learning!

Year 2 With class assemblies and International Day, it’s been a very busy and exciting week in Year 2! We have absolutely loved sharing our class assemblies with you and hope you enjoyed watching them as much as the children enjoyed performing. In English, we are continuing our learning on The Dragon Machine. This week, the children have been planning and writing detailed setting descriptions, focusing on using descriptive language to bring their ideas to life. Next week, we will begin a new story called The Magic Paintbrush, where the children will be exploring the narrative and writing their own alternative endings. In maths, we are consolidating our learning on money before moving on to our new topic of multiplication. The children are showing great enthusiasm and are ready to take on this next challenge. In art, we are continuing our work inspired by Keith Haring. This week, we are exploring his focus on people and community, linking this to the ‘We Are Youth’ project that Keith Haring created. We are very excited to begin planning and creating our own mural. In science, the children explored exercise and what happens to our heart when we exercise. The children loved trying to find and count their pulse! Next we will be learning about the importance of hygiene and also life cycles. In geography, we are learning about different types of buildings as part of our topic on human and physical features. In computing, the children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring stop-motion animation. They have loved experimenting with creating short videos and developing their digital creativity. It’s been a wonderful week in Year 2, and we’re looking forward to another exciting week ahead!
