Reception News

Read on to find out what has been happening in reception.
We have had a vibrant and colourful two weeks in Reception.
In Topic, we have learnt about two new festivals: Carnival and Lunar New Year. The children marvelled at the wonderful colours, music, parades and costumes. Our steel pan workshop and carnival day have really brought our new learning to life. They looked brilliant wearing the headdresses that they designed and were very proud of their Chinese dragons which were the focus of our art activity.
In Phonics, we have been revisiting the Set 2 ‘special friends’: ay, ee, igh, ow, oo (as in zoo) and oo (as in book), with a focus on using our ‘Fred fingers’ to write dictated words and phrases containing these sounds. It has been fantastic to see some of the children beginning to use the ‘special friends’ in their writing and growing in confidence when blending them in their reading.
In English we have been learning when to use a capital letter and last week wrote a simple sentence to describe our headdress design. This week we discovered which animal we are in the Lunar New Year. We were either a rat or an ox!! We drew our animal and wrote a sentence to go with it.
We have been learning about more than and fewer than in maths, understanding that the size, colour, or type of object does not affect the quantity. It is the number that determines whether someone has more or fewer. We have also been exploring positional language, using words such as on, under and behind to describe where an object is. Opal owl and Jade turtle went on quite a journey around the classroom.
We wish you all a wonderful half term break.

Please can you continue to give us donations of clean recycling to add to our junk modelling as we use it throughout the year - small boxes, toilet rolls etc. However, we cannot accept anything that once contained nuts, eggs or fish.

If your child has borrowed any clothes, please make sure these are washed and returned. We are running very low!

Every Friday, we celebrate any star moments your child has had at home e.g. learnt to ride a bike, helped their siblings at home, started a new club, used wonderful manners to a relative etc. The spare ‘Star Moments’ sheets can be found hanging on the door if you run out.

Please continue to bring in reading folders every Wednesday and these will be returned with new books on Thursdays. Please listen to your child read at least 5 times a week and record their progress in the reading record.
