What has been happening in year 1 and year 2?

Year 1

The past two weeks have been incredibly busy and full of exciting experiences for Year 1. The children have shown fantastic enthusiasm and resilience, and we are so proud of everything they have achieved.

We started with International Day, which was a wonderful, engaging, and immersive experience for the children. A huge thank you to all the parent volunteers who came in to support the day and share activities, stories, and experiences. The children loved learning about different cultures and traditions, and it truly brought our classroom learning to life.

We also had a brilliant time taking part in Numbers Day, where we joined forces with Year 3. Together, we completed lots of fun and challenging maths activities to unlock a secret code. It was lovely to see the children working collaboratively, building confidence, and using their maths skills in different ways.

Our trip to Holly Lodge was another highlight! We braved the rain, mud, and plenty of puddles, but it was absolutely worth it. The children had the best time learning all about plants. Activities included building and labelling trees, exploring the outdoor environment, and potting our own basil plants to take home and grow. The children were fantastic explorers and showed great curiosity throughout the day.

Back in the classroom, we are finishing our book Somebody Swallowed Stanley by writing a diary entry in the first person, summarising all the events that happened to Stanley during his journey. In maths, we have been practising addition and subtraction within 20 using a variety of methods, including near doubles, jumps on number lines, and our number bond knowledge to 10.

Thank you for your continued support – it has been a wonderful and memorable couple of weeks in Year 1!

Year 2

The children have had a brilliant and busy half-term. From celebrating Children’s Mental Health Week and International Day to fantastic class assemblies and open classrooms, the children have given 110% in everything they have done.

In English, we have rounded off the term with the book The Magic Paintbrush, which is inspired by an ancient Chinese folktale. The children came up with some super creative ideas for alternative endings to this exciting story. They have also learned various SPaG skills to support their writing, such as spelling the word Emperor, using the suffixes -est and -er, and using the conjunctions and, but and or.

In Maths, we have explored the world of multiplication and division. The children have used arrays to find different multiplications and practised sharing equally into groups to divide. We have also begun to explore our times tables, starting with counting in twos and multiplying by 2.

In Geography, the children have explored the human and physical features of Richmond Park and discussed the origins of our local park. We looked at why the park was created, who previously had the rights to use it, and how this has changed over time.

In Science, the children have been exploring different life cycles and making comparisons between the life cycle of a frog and that of a butterfly, as well as other life cycles they are familiar with. They thought critically about how the life cycles differ and how they might be similar.

In Art, we have begun to build our collaborative mural inspired by Keith Haring. The children have thought carefully about their colour choices, using their knowledge of primary and secondary colours to mix and plan their contributions. We have also discussed what it means to be part of a community and how this can be represented through art.
