Reception News

Read on to find out what has been happening in reception.

Over the past two weeks in Reception, we have launched our exciting new topic: Superheroes! We began by learning about real-life superheroes and discussing how everyday people can be heroes by helping others. This inspired some fantastic conversations about kindness, bravery and helping our community.

In writing, the children have been busy creating their very own superheroes. They carefully chose a superhero name and thought about what special superpower they might have. We were so impressed with their imaginative ideas and growing confidence in writing.

In maths, we have been exploring different ways of making 8 using a variety of practical resources. The children have also been ordering numbers and using mathematical language such as more and less to compare amounts.

In phonics, we have introduced our new Set 2 sounds: ar, or, air, ir, ou, oy, kn and wh. The children have been working hard to recognise these sounds in words and use them in their reading and writing.

In PE, we have been developing our throwing and catching skills. The children loved throwing balls at a large target and especially enjoyed using soft “snowballs” during a fun class game of dodgeball.

Our outdoor learning garden has been transformed into a superhero headquarters! The children have taken part in exciting missions around the garden to “save” people, showing fantastic teamwork and imagination.

We have also enjoyed visits from our first mystery readers, who delighted the children by sharing their favourite stories. This inspired thoughtful discussions about favourite books and characters, and the children were keen to write about them.

In science, we explored different materials, learning to name them and describe their properties. The children enjoyed investigating and talking about what materials are like and how we use them.

It has been a wonderful start to our superhero topic, full of creativity, teamwork and enthusiasm for learning!

Talk homework

At home, with your child, we would like to encourage you to have a conversation about the learning we are doing in school. In every newsletter, we will share with you an idea to spark a conversation with your child.

This week, ask your child -

Who helps us in our community? (e.g. doctors, firefighters, police officers, teachers)

How does a Doctor help people?

When might we need a Firefighter?

How do people help us in school?

Can you think of someone who helps you?

Messages:

  • We have a year group of very creative little ones, so please can you continue to bring in recycling weekly to support their love of our creation station! Next week the children will be making emergency services vehicles, such as fire engines, police cars, ambulances. We need small boxes to make this possible. Please can you bring these in for next week.

  • If your child has borrowed any clothes, please make sure these are washed and returned. We are running very low!

  • Every Friday, we celebrate any star moments your child has had at home e.g. learnt to ride a bike, helped their siblings at home, started a new club, used wonderful manners to a relative etc. The spare ‘Star Moments’ sheets can be found hanging on the door if you run out.

  • Please continue to bring in reading folders every Wednesday and these will be returned with new books on Thursdays. Please listen to your child read at least 5 times a week and record their progress in the reading record.

  • We would love to invite any family members who have occupations such as doctors, dentists, nurses, firefighters, police officers, or other similar roles (linked to our topic - ‘people who help us’) to come in and talk to the children about their work. This could be through a short talk, answering questions, or sharing equipment or uniforms (where appropriate). If you would be interested in taking part or would like more information, please do get in touch with your child's teacher. We would be delighted to arrange this and greatly appreciate your support.

Upcoming dates

  • Tuesday 17th March 3.30-7pm and Thursday 19th March 3.30 - 6.30pm - Parent/Teacher consultations. Please ensure that you have made an appointment.
