Read on to find out about what has been happening in years 3 & 4.

Year 3

It has been a wonderful two weeks in Year 3 and we have really been enjoying the warmer days with lots more learning taking place outdoors in PE, reading and with drama.

With just one more week to go until half term, we are beginning to wrap up our topics in maths, English and history. In English, the children have been very busy tasting their own tea and are now preparing to make their own tea bags to advertise just how delicious they are! Using imperative verbs, prepositional language, and incredible adjectives, the children are ready for everyone to try their “Cloudy Monkey Tea.”

In maths, we have been focusing on measuring using grams, kilograms, millilitres, and litres. The children have enjoyed comparing, adding and subtracting different measurements and have shown great enthusiasm in their learning.

In history, we have been learning about the Tudors and the age of exploration. The children explored why exploration was so important to Queen Elizabeth I, including how discovering new lands and trade routes helped to make England wealthier and more powerful. We also discussed what life was like for explorers, thinking about the long journeys by sea, the challenges they faced, and the excitement of discovering new places and treasures.

In science and DT, we have been learning about bones and the human body. The children have explored the purpose of the skeleton and how it supports movement and protects our organs. Linking this to design and technology the children have designed and began creating their own books with different mechanisms, such as flaps and moving parts, to demonstrate how the human body works. They have shown great creativity and problem-solving skills in bringing their ideas to life.

We are very proud of all the hard work the children have shown and look forward to a fantastic final week before half term!

Year 4

It was a delight to read the children’s descriptions of the Iron Man and to see how hard they worked at incorporating the literary techniques we have been learning this year.

A key focus for Year 4 is vocabulary, and we would encourage you to practise the Year 3 and 4 spelling words at home with your child/children. We continue to practise these words in school and encourage the children to use them in their writing.

The children completed their fraction topic by discovering how to subtract fractions from whole numbers.  They have now started looking at the relationship between fractions and decimals.

In PE this half term, the children are developing their skills in outdoor adventurous activities. Last week, we focused on map symbols and keys.   When we return after Easter, we will visit Marble Hill Park to explore working at height.

In Science, we have started our new topic looking at how sound is made and how we hear sound. In RE, attention has turned to Islam, exploring what activities Muslims are required to do, can do, and cannot do during Ramadan.

We have looked at making stable structures and explored different materials for making greenhouses in DT.  The children will be making their greenhouses and planting seeds during the week of 23rd March, so please ensure all resources are in school by then.
