Read on to find out about what has been happening in years 3 & 4.
Year 3
Year 3 have been incredibly busy and engaged in their learning this week, fully immersing themselves in our exciting new wider curriculum topics. In science, we have been investigating what a light source is. We also applied our scientific skills by identifying and classifying materials based on how they interact with light. Using our knowledge, we explored and sorted objects into transparent, translucent and opaque, explaining how light travels through each.
In art, we have continued studying the work of Njideka Crosby and explored the technique of tessellation. The children created their own tessellating patterns using homemade stencils, they look absolutely fantastic and we look forward to seeing their final pieces.
Geography lessons have focused on developing our map skills. We have been navigating atlases to locate different countries and identify mountain ranges that we will be studying in more detail.
English has been a real highlight in Year 3. We are thoroughly enjoying George’s Marvellous Medicine and have been working towards an exciting new writing outcome… creating detailed descriptions of Grandma to share with Reception. The children have planned ambitious vocabulary and explored sentence structures to make their descriptions engaging and full of detail.
In maths, our focus has been on money. Through hands-on activities, we have been adding, subtracting, and converting amounts. To bring our learning to life, we even set up a pretend shop to put our knowledge to the test!

Year 4
We’ve had a fantastic start to the summer term in year 4 - the sunshine has been amazing and the children have been brimming with positivity.
We must start with our class assemblies! We are so proud of every child who performed with focus and enthusiasm! The children didn’t have long to learn their lines after the Easter break, and proved what they can achieve in a short space of time. Well done everyone!
In English, the children have completed their formal letters written as Lucy, the youngest sibling, about her thoughts as an evacuee. The children are excited for our next piece of writing, exploring what is beyond the wardrobe!
In maths, our focus has been on decimals. The children have really enjoyed learning about tenths and hundredths, and have become increasingly confident in ordering, comparing and adding decimals. They will now apply this knowledge in our new topic on money, where they will write amounts as decimals and convert between pounds and pence.
Our new art topic has explored the use of different media, with a theme of nature. Last week, the children collected leaves from the school grounds, and experimented with printing by painting directly onto the leaves!
The children have thoroughly enjoyed our science topic on sound. They explored how sound is measured in decibels and investigated differences in volume and pitch. Using instruments, they learned how high and low pitch sounds are created and even played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on the glockenspiels. They also visited the music room to explore a wider range of instruments and continue experimenting with pitch.
In computing, the children have been investigating weather and learning how technology can be used to collect data. They programmed MicroBits to measure and record temperature, developing their understanding of both coding algorithms and real-world applications.
