Read on to find out what has been happening in years 5 & 6
Year 5
This week in English, the children have been reflecting on their wonderful memories from the Juniper Hall residential by writing detailed trip reviews. It has been lovely to see them recount their favourite moments from the visit, using descriptive language and thoughtful reflections to bring their experiences to life.
In maths, the children have finished their shape unit, where they explored translations using both visual representations and coordinates, as well as reflecting shapes accurately. They have now moved on to adding and subtracting decimals, approaching this new topic with confidence as it links in nicely with previous learning.
In computing, the children have been continuing their exciting stop-motion animation project. This week, they practised creating stop-motion videos and carefully planned their final projects ready to begin filming next week. The class has thoroughly enjoyed this unit so far and are extremely eager to continue developing their ideas.
In science, the children have continued their learning about living things by moving from studying animals to exploring humans and life cycles. They investigated the different stages of human development, including the growth of an embryo, which they found both fascinating and educational. The children approached this topic with maturity and curiosity, asking thoughtful questions and making excellent links to previous learning.
In geography, the children have been learning about the Caribbean islands. They explored where the islands are located and compared its tropical climate to that of the UK by creating their own temperature and rainfall graphs. The children discussed the differences in weather patterns and seasons, developing a greater understanding of how climate varies around the world.
In art, the children have been studying the work of Frida Kahlo. They explored her artwork and discussed how colour schemes can reflect mood and emotion. The children also practised drawing different parts of the face, focusing on proportion and using guidelines to create more realistic sketches. Alongside this, they explored how culture can play an important role in artistic expression, leading to some thoughtful discussions and impressive artwork.

Year 6
We are incredibly proud of how our Year 6 pupils have adapted to the more focused and intensive timetable in the lead-up to SATs, with Maths and English taking centre stage. The children have approached revision with enthusiasm, enjoying a range of creative activities such as scavenger hunts and codebreakers, which have made learning both engaging and fun. They have shown great flexibility in their learning, confidently working independently as well as collaboratively in pairs and small groups to tackle exam-style questions. It has also been wonderful to see them take ownership of their learning by creating informative and colourful posters for our working wall, helping to reinforce key concepts for the whole class.
Alongside our SATs preparation, we have continued to enjoy a range of other subjects to provide a balanced and refreshing break from revision. In art, the children have been exploring different paint strokes and brush types, learning which tools are best suited for particular techniques and considering the emotions that can be conveyed through their choices. In our reading sessions, we have been delving further into Skellig, using the novel as a stimulus for practising comprehension-style questions and developing deeper understanding. We have also been making the most of the glorious sunshine in our PE lessons, where the children have been building their skills across a variety of athletics activities with great enthusiasm.
We hope you all have a restful and relaxing weekend, ready for the week ahead. Best of luck to all of our Year 6 pupils in their exams next week - we know they will do themselves proud!
