What has been happening in year 1 and year 2?

Year 1

What a wonderful final week we have had in Year 1 before the half-term break!

In English, we thoroughly enjoyed finishing The Emperor’s Egg and using all we had learned to create our own fact files about emperor penguins. The children worked hard to organise their information using subheadings such as Appearance, Diet and Habitat. We also focused on including the key features of a fact file, including a clear title, labelled pictures, subheadings and interesting facts. The children were very proud of their finished work!

In maths, we have continued learning about halving and quartering amounts. We have been practising sharing objects into equal groups and understanding that halves are 2 equal parts and quarters are 4 equal parts. We have also started learning positional language, including quarter turns, half turns, left and right, and forwards and backwards. This is something you could continue to practise at home over the half-term break.

In art, we have loved exploring the work of Andy Goldsworthy and Antony Gormley. Inspired by their artwork, we used clay to create tree faces and mini sculptures of ourselves. The children showed fantastic creativity and imagination with their designs. In geography, we learned about hot deserts and cold deserts and compared their different climates and features. In science, we investigated what it might feel like to lose one of our senses and discovered how our other senses help us understand the world around us. In computing, we developed our digital imagery skills further by learning how to edit our photographs.

We hope you all have a lovely and restful half-term break!

Year 2

The children have had a fun-filled and busy week in school! They have shown great enthusiasm, creativity, and teamwork in all of their activities.

This week in class:

In English, the children have been writing an alternative version of The Gigantic Turnip. They have enjoyed using their imagination to change parts of the story and create exciting new ideas. In Maths, we have been practising telling the time. We have focused on o’clock, quarter past, quarter to, half past, and reading time in 5-minute intervals. The children have worked hard to build their confidence with an analogue clock. Please do practise telling the time with the children at any given opportunity.

In Science, we have been learning about materials and investigating whether objects are flexible or rigid. The children enjoyed experimenting with different materials and discussing their properties. In Geography, we finished our topic on São Paulo by comparing Richmond and São Paulo. The children thought carefully about the similarities and differences between the two places. In Art, the children have loved recreating their own Kandinsky-inspired artwork. They explored colour, shape, and pattern to create some beautiful pieces inspired by Wassily Kandinsky. They thoroughly enjoyed this topic and did a fantastic job! Well done Year 2.

Looking ahead:

On Thursday 4th June, Year 2 will be taking part in a Geography fieldwork day. The children will be exploring the local area and observing different types of buildings as part of their learning. We will be walking into Richmond, along the riverside and around the green and would greatly appreciate any volunteers who are available to help accompany the classes. If you are able to support us, please let your child’s teacher know.
