LKS2 News

Read on to find out about what has been happening in years 3 & 4.

Year 3

What a wonderful end to this half term it has been in Year 3! We are incredibly proud of everything the children have achieved over the past few weeks and have loved seeing their enthusiasm across all areas of learning.

In English, we have completed our final writing outcomes linked to George’s Marvellous Medicine. The children have written fabulous alternative endings based on their own imaginative ideas about what might happen next in the story. Using drama activities helped us to explore characters’ thoughts and reactions, uncover new ideas and develop exciting storylines. We have also been focusing on using inverted commas correctly to bring our writing to life through dialogue. It has been wonderful to see the children becoming increasingly confident, creative writers. Although we are saying goodbye to George’s Marvellous Medicine, we cannot wait to share all the fantastic writing we have been working on during our upcoming class assemblies.

In maths, we have been learning all about telling the time. We began by revisiting o’clock, half past and quarter past before moving on to telling the time to the nearest five minutes and even the nearest minute! The children have loved using the classroom clocks to test their knowledge and challenge one another.

In geography, we enjoyed exploring Mont Blanc and Scafell Pike, comparing the two mountains and discussing their different physical features. Many children decided they would love to visit Mont Blanc for skiing, whilst others fancied hiking up Scafell Pike!

Art has been incredibly busy and exciting too. We have been bringing our final pieces to life inspired by the artwork of Njideka Crosby. Using family photographs, magazines and the technique of mosaic, we created the carpets in our room scenes. They are looking absolutely wonderful, and we are excited to share them with you soon, although we cannot believe this is our final art piece of Year 3 already!

Year 4

This half term has flown by! As the break approaches, the children continue to work with great pride and enthusiasm. Everyone is taking a focused approach to their times table practice, with the MTC test taking place in Summer 2, week beginning 1st June.

Firstly, the children had a wonderful time at the British Museum, looking at Egyptian artefacts and engaging in a fascinating talk that demonstrated the history of discovering mummies and their connection to the afterlife.

In English, over the past three weeks, the children have been planning and writing a narrative set within the land of Narnia - but with their own twist (ask them about their unique setting and character!). They have written in the first person, described settings, created characters and included speech using inverted commas.

In maths, we have concluded our topic on fractions, decimals and money! We would encourage adults to point out decimals when they pop up in the real world so the children’s understanding of tenths 0.1 and hundredths 0.01 is embedded, ready for more learning in year 5. We have begun our new topic on time. So far this week, the children have estimated how long something will take and recapped how many minutes are in an hour, how many hours are in a day and the duration of months.

In geography, the children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about volcanoes as part of their work on tectonic plates and earthquakes. They explored how volcanoes are formed and investigated the reasons why they erupt. The children also compared Hawaii and California, developing their understanding of why both states experience volcanic activity, while identifying the similarities and differences in their landscapes and geographical features.

As this is the last newsletter before the half term break: we hope you have a wonderful half term, and a gentle reminder to please remind your child to continue to practise their times tables as much as possible in readiness for the MTC check!
