Read on to find out what has been happening in years 5 & 6

Year 5

This week in English, the children have been developing their writing skills by focusing on the use of quotes, apostrophes for possession, and direct speech. They have been editing and publishing their fairy-tale newspaper reports and have done a brilliant job writing with a clear audience and purpose in mind. The children have thoroughly enjoyed our class text, Blackberry Blue, and have produced some lovely work to finish the topic. We are now looking forward to beginning our exciting new text, Beowulf, next term.

In maths, the children have continued their learning about decimals by focusing on adding and subtracting decimals and becoming more confident when applying their knowledge to word problems. They also explored the relationship between decimals and multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, and 1000, linking this understanding back to reasoning and problem-solving activities. The children have been particularly successful at clearly showing how decimals become greater and smaller when multiplying and dividing, which is such important foundational knowledge for their future maths learning.

In computing, the children edited and shared their stop-motion animations with the class, which was wonderful to see and celebrate together. They worked incredibly hard on these projects throughout the term and produced some fantastic final pieces. The children thoroughly enjoyed the unit and many said they would love to continue creating stop-motion animations at home. We used the Stop Motion Studio app on the iPads, so they may wish to explore this further independently.

In geography, the children have been learning about tectonic plates and earthquakes, linking their understanding back to the Caribbean islands and the Haiti earthquake. They also made excellent connections to our science learning about forces, particularly when discussing the friction between tectonic plates and how this can cause earthquakes.

In art, the children completed their final self-portraits using all the skills and techniques they have developed throughout the topic. They carefully applied their knowledge to create some really impressive pieces of artwork. To finish the unit, the children took part in a classroom gallery walk where they explored each other’s work, asked questions and celebrated everyone’s achievements.

Good job to all the children who took part in Bikeability! What a success!

Year 6

Our Year 6 children approached their SATs week with incredible maturity, resilience and determination and we could not be prouder of the way they conducted themselves throughout the tests. They worked hard, supported one another and showed a fantastic attitude every single day. To celebrate all of their efforts, we enjoyed a well-deserved trip to Terrace Gardens on Friday, where the children had great fun letting off some steam with a giant play session and spending time together outdoors. A huge thank you to the parents who joined us and helped make the trip such a success.

Since completing their SATs, Year 6 have thrown themselves enthusiastically into a range of exciting new projects. We have launched our business-themed enterprise project, where the children have been demonstrating fantastic creativity while designing their own fair stalls and developing their understanding of profit and revenue as they work towards raising money for our cinema trip this summer. In art, we have begun creating abstract pieces inspired by Favianna Rodriguez, using themes they feel passionate about such as plastic pollution, children’s mental health and equality. However, the highlight of the week has certainly been the start of our production of The Lion King! We held some truly talent-filled auditions where the children showcased their expressive, confident, energetic, and captivating drama skills. The songs have been stuck in our heads all week, and we cannot wait to continue rehearsals after the half-term break.

Congratulations to all of our Year 6 children for the hard work, resilience, and positivity they have shown throughout this busy and exciting half term. We hope you all enjoy a well-deserved break with your families and take the opportunity to rest and recharge. We are very much looking forward to the final half term of their time at The Vineyard School - there is still so much to look forward to, with many memorable moments, celebrations, and experiences still to come and we intend to enjoy every single one together.
