Reception News

Read on to find out what has been happening in reception.

Over the past two weeks in Reception, we’ve had a fantastic time filled with learning, creativity, and exploration. In English, the children have written sentences about what they would like to be and do in the future. Some children have ‘stretched’ their sentences and included the conjunction ‘because’ to describe why. In maths, we have introduced the children to rekenreks—an exciting tool that helps us visualise numbers and understand counting, addition, and number patterns. The children have loved sliding the beads to solve simple number problems and strengthen their early maths confidence.

Last week, we celebrated FUDGE Week, which was a big hit! It was so special to welcome our grown-ups into the classroom to join in with play and activities. The children were so proud to share their learning spaces and show off their favourite games.

Our topic work took us back in time as we have begun learning about dinosaurs! The children surprised us with their prior knowledge of dinosaurs. They have used split pins to make moving dinosaurs, used box modelling to recreate dinosaurs, used collage skills to decorate eggs and even had a go at sketching their own dinosaurs.

Finally, our Vineyard Adventures have taken us outdoors, where we’ve had fun building dens, working together, and exploring nature. It’s been a joyful and busy fortnight full of teamwork, imagination, and discovery!

Talk homework

At home, with your child, we would like to encourage you to have a conversation about the learning we are doing in school. In every newsletter, we will share with you an idea to spark a conversation with your child.

This week, ask your child -

  • Can you tell me what a carnivore/ herbivore/ omnivore eats?

  • Can you tell me something that happened in the past?

  • Why did some dinosaurs have long necks?

  • Why did some dinosaurs have flat teeth?

  • What are the plates on the back of a dinosaur used for?

  • Name as many dinosaurs as you can.
