What has been happening in year 1 and year 2?
Year 1
The sunshine has certainly arrived in Year 1! Water bottles have become our most important classroom accessories, and hats have been spotted everywhere! Despite the warm weather, the children have continued to work hard, impressing us with their enthusiasm, energy, and smiles.
The children were delighted by a wonderful visit this week from some wild and fascinating creatures, including meerkats, chinchillas, snakes, tarantulas and lizards! They were completely enthralled as they learned about these magnificent animals, exploring their habitats, diets and unique adaptations for survival. Showing bravery, the children took the opportunity to hold some of the animals!
In English, we have been inspired by our new book, Iggy Peck, Architect, to plan a detailed setting description of their dream school for Mrs Bracegirdle! Thinking carefully about the features, spaces and exciting opportunities their schools would offer and using their ambitious vocabulary and skills to impress. We are sure Mrs Bracegirdle will be delighted with their ideas!
This learning has linked perfectly with our DT topic, Stable Structures, where the children have been designing their own pet houses. They have been using their science knowledge of materials to consider how to make them both practical and sturdy.
In maths, we have started learning about money and the value of different notes and coins. The children have enjoyed exploring these practically and will even set up their own shops soon!
Fascinated by the history of flight, Year 1 has been exploring the pioneering work of the Wright brothers, who achieved the first powered flight and changed the world forever. They also discovered the incredible achievements of Amelia Earhart, who inspired many with her courage and determination as she broke boundaries in aviation. To celebrate her achievements, they designed and created special medals in honour of Amelia Earhart.
We hope for cooler weather in the coming weeks, but we know that the children will continue to stay positive, engaged and ready to learn whatever the weather brings.

Year 2
We have had another warm, busy and exciting week in Year 2!
In English, we have been writing persuasive letters to convince Mrs Dempster and Mrs Bracegirdle to keep our library open. The children have worked hard to include persuasive language, facts to support their arguments, contractions and commas in a list. We have been so impressed with their thoughtful ideas and convincing reasons!
In maths, we have been learning about position and direction. The children have been using the language of turns, movement and direction, as well as describing positions using left, right, above, below and quarter, half and three-quarter turns.
In History, we have continued our learning about the Tudors. This week, we explored how Tudor monarchs used royal parks, including Richmond Park, for hunting, leisure and entertainment. The children enjoyed discovering how these green spaces have changed over time.
In science, we have continued investigating the properties of different materials. We have been comparing materials, discussing their suitability for different purposes and carrying out simple investigations to help us understand why certain materials are chosen for particular objects.
Our reading lessons have been filled with fascinating facts as we continue to explore our wonderful non-fiction book all about Africa. The children have loved discovering information about its diverse countries, landscapes, animals and cultures, while developing their comprehension skills through discussion and questioning.
Thank you for your continued support. We hope you have a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to another fantastic week of learning!
