Read on to find out what has been happening in Years 1 & 2?

Year 1

It has been another busy and exciting week in Year 1 with lots of wonderful learning taking place across the curriculum!

In English, the children have loved exploring The Storm Whale by Benji Davies. We have worked hard to sequence the events of the story using pictures and time adverbials to help us retell the events in the correct order. This week, the children have been retelling the story through writing, completing a little bit each day. We have been focusing carefully on writing clear sentences, remembering our capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. The children have shown great enthusiasm and are developing their confidence as young writers!

In maths, we have been exploring place value within 20. The children have been practising counting forwards and backwards and developing their understanding of the numbers in this range. We have also been using bead strings to help us find one more and one less than a given number. These practical resources have been a great way to support our learning and build our mathematical confidence.

In art, we have completed our final pieces inspired by the wonderful Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. The children drew their own outlines and used dots to decorate their work, taking inspiration from Kusama’s distinctive style. We are so proud of their creativity and the care they have taken with their finished pieces!

Well done Year 1 for another fantastic week of learning.

Coming up:

In science we are starting to classify and sort animals based on their animal groups. We named those 5 groups and thought about what makes each group different. Next term we will start these wider curriculum subjects: history, RE (religious education), DT (design and technology).

Key messages from the Year 1 team:

  • Please ensure your child brings their reading folders in with their reading record and books on Mondays.

  • PE for both classes: Wednesday and Friday. A polite reminder that trainers should only be worn on a PE day (unless they have a club before or after school).

  • Please ensure your child has a book bag - we cannot safely house rucksacks due to our limited space.

  • Just as a reminder there will be no more afternoon snacks after half-term. If you would like, you can provide your child with a packed morning snack instead. Thank you.

Year 2

What a brilliant first half term we have had in Year 2! The children have shown great enthusiasm and worked incredibly hard. We are very proud of them!

In English, we are finishing our Traction Man adventures by writing a diary entry about his mission to rescue his pet Scrubbing Brush. The children have been putting themselves in Traction Man’s shoes, recounting events in order and using first person, past tense and time adverbials to bring their diaries to life.

In maths, we have been exploring fact families, discovering how addition and subtraction are linked. The children have used their number knowledge to create four related number sentences and explain how they know their answers are correct.

In science, we have been investigating microhabitats, venturing into the playground to discover which minibeasts live there and why these tiny habitats make such good homes.

Coming up after half term

We will explore a new story about tennis star Serena Williams and use what we learn to write our own fact files. In maths, we will develop our addition and subtraction skills with two-digit numbers, including crossing tens and solving missing-number problems.

Wishing you all a lovely, restful half term!
