Read on to find out what has been happening in Years 1 & 2?

Year 1

Welcome back, Year 1! We hope you all had a lovely, restful half-term break and enjoyed some special time with family and friends. It has been wonderful to see everyone back in school, ready for another exciting half-term full of learning, creativity and fun!

In English, we have started our new book, Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion. We have been exploring the story and thinking of lots of exciting adjectives to describe characters and settings. We are using our fantastic vocabulary to create some eye-catching wanted posters, and we can't wait to share our finished work with you!

In maths, we have been focusing on decade numbers and developing our understanding of counting in tens. We have been practising counting forwards and backwards in 10s all the way to 100. The children have been working hard to build their confidence and spot number patterns.

We are also very excited to kickstart our wider curriculum learning this half-term! In RE (religious education), we will be learning about Christianity and exploring some of its key beliefs and traditions. In DT (design and technology), we will be putting our practical skills to the test by designing and making our very own delicious fruit kebabs! Finally, in history, we will be travelling back in time to discover what life was like during the Victorian era.

There is so much to look forward to, and we can't wait to see all the wonderful learning that takes place over the coming weeks. Thank you, as always, for your continued support!

Coming up:

We are very excited to continue our Victorian learning through our history topic with an upcoming trip to the Richmond museum to learn about Victorian toys as well as our Victorian workshop where the children will pretend they are in Victorian school!

Key messages from the Year 1 team:

  • Please ensure your child brings their reading folders in with their reading record and books on Mondays.

  • 13th November for the Sunstone trip to Richmond museum and 20th November for the Diamond trip

  • Victorian workshop on the 17th November - children are welcome to come dressed up for the day!

  • PE for both classes: Wednesday and Friday. A polite reminder that trainers should only be worn on a PE day (unless they have a club before or after school).

Year 2

What a fantastic start back to the new half term we have had in Year 2! It has been lovely to hear all about what the children have been getting up to during their week off and to welcome everyone back, ready for another exciting half term of learning.

In English, we have started our new book, Serena Williams, our first non-fiction book in Year 2. The children have already enjoyed learning all about Serena's life and achievements, as well as using the iPads to research and discover some key facts about her.

In maths, we have continued our topic of addition and subtraction. The children have been exploring a range of resources and methods to help them add and subtract across a ten, developing their confidence and understanding when working with numbers.

We have also kicked off our first history, DT and computing units of the year! In history, the children have been immersing themselves in the life of Mary Seacole, exploring some of the traditional herbs and spices that were used as medicines back in the 1800s. In DT, we have started our exciting new topic all about pizza! The children have been sharing their favourite pizza toppings and finding out what their classmates enjoy, ready to begin exploring and designing their own pizzas.

Coming up:

Next week, we will be using all the information we have gathered about Serena Williams to plan and write our very own fact files. In maths, we will be introducing more methods for addition and subtraction before bringing the topic to a close by solving word problems, using all the strategies and skills we have learnt so far.

Key messages from the Year 2 team:

  • New spellings should now have been added to your child's spelling book. Please check and speak to your child's class teacher if you cannot locate them.

  • Please note that the new PE days for both classes are now Mondays and Thursdays.

  • We are always grateful for parent volunteers who are able to come in and listen to children read. If you would be interested in volunteering, please get in touch with the Year 2 team.

  • Miss Minns will also be offering a drop-in session after school for any parents who would be interested in volunteering to support handwriting and fine motor activities. If this is something you would like to get involved in, please email the Year 2 inbox.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support!
