The school day is full of active opportunities for all children. These opportunities develop a love for moving, and a confidence when learning specific sports.  

Each day starts with the opportunity to attend either our in-house extended day provision (EDP), or one of our 18 external extracurricular active options. The morning playtimes focus on non-equipment tag-based games, and the afternoon lunchtimes allow for a breadth of sports and activities using equipment (adventure playground, football, four square, basketball). 

Two lessons of Physical Education a week develop the physical skills required to apply to traditional sports. 

P.E lessons start to focus on competition. Creating personal bests, shared benchmarks, direct competition, competing in teams, competing against other schools.

Children of all years take part in intra-sport on a Friday afternoon. From a combination of intra-sport competitions, extracurricular attendance, and community recommendations, the school selects children to represent the school at KS2 Richmond Sports Development and Richmond School Games invitational events.

Within school competition, children should be able to appreciate and cope with the elements of competition (readiness). Some key understandings need to be nurtured and handled with care, such as, winning, losing, fair play, teamwork, selection/non-selection.

Parents: The school promotes a high standard of behaviour at all sports fixtures to ensure sport can be played in a safe and positive environment. Teaching staff follow the school behaviour policy and use techniques with the children linked to zones of regulation. Parents should encourage and celebrate children's performance without giving instructions to children. Teachers will use a technique of questioning to ensure the children are learning and identifying together the next steps. Parents should accept the decisions made by staff with regard to team selection, tactics and substitutions. Richmond Borough has a code of conduct for spectators which we as a school agree to adhere to. Breach of this code could result in the school being removed from all tournaments.
