Reception at The Vineyard
In Reception, we believe that children learn best through play, exploration and meaningful experiences that spark their curiosity and develop a lifelong love of learning. Our curriculum follows the Development Matters guidance and provides a balance of child-initiated, free-flow learning and adult-guided activities, allowing children to make choices, develop independence and follow their own interests. Through our free-flow approach across both Reception classrooms, children can move between the two learning environments, accessing a wider range of provision, resources and experiences to meet their individual needs and interests.

Learning is enriched through engaging topics that inspire curiosity and provide opportunities to develop key skills, with a particular focus on early reading, writing, mathematics and phonics. Our continuous provision evolves throughout the year to reflect children's developing skills, interests and next steps in learning. This includes our Creation Station, where children can become budding artists, experimenting with a wide range of materials, tools and resources to express their creativity, develop their fine motor skills and bring their ideas to life.
Our wonderful outdoor learning area offers two exciting levels, each providing unique opportunities for exploration, discovery and physical development. The upper level features a large sandpit, water play, a stage for imaginative performances and a construction area where children can design, build and problem-solve. The lower level includes a climbing frame, a woodland area, bikes to develop balance and coordination, and a mud kitchen where children can mix, create and engage in imaginative play. Together with our indoor provision, these spaces encourage children to investigate, collaborate, take risks and learn through first-hand experiences.

We take a holistic view of every child, recognising that their social, emotional, physical and communication skills are just as important as their academic development. Through our carefully planned provision and working in partnership with families, we support learning across all 17 areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), ensuring every child is nurtured, challenged and supported to grow in confidence, develop independence and reach their full potential.
